These are the results of the latest Solcom market study "Freelancers: work and life in harmony?". Between March and May 2016, the technology service provider surveyed the 9,255 subscribers to the Freelancer Magazine surveyed. The respondents include many freelancers from the IT sector, but also from other professions.
Key messages of the study
Good compatibility
The majority of the freelancers surveyed work more than 40 hours a week, with one in four even working more than 50 hours. Despite this, more than half of them feel that their work is compatible with their family or private life, with only one in five having a different experience. Accordingly, the majority of survey participants also see their self-employment as more compatible with family or private life than a permanent position, although a third also see it the other way around.
Self-determination most important value
For four out of ten respondents, the better work-life balance options were a reason to switch to freelancing, while only one in ten would go the other way and return to a permanent position. The greatest difficulties in achieving a good work-life balance are seen in the need to travel, followed by the workload on projects and economic uncertainty.
Considering the above statements, it is not surprising that three quarters of the freelancers surveyed cite "self-determination" as an important value that they base their lives on, followed by "success and recognition".
1. do you feel you have enough time for your family and private life?
More than half of the freelancers surveyed feel that they have enough time for their family or private life, but this is only always the case for just under one in ten. On the other hand, a cumulative 23.1 percent only have a little time for family and private life, 4.3 percent of whom never do. According to the survey, 20.3% of participants sometimes have time for activities outside of work.

2. how many hours do you work per week with a normal workload?
A total of 71.9% of survey participants work more than 40 hours per week, almost a quarter of them even work more than 50 hours. In contrast, however, almost as many freelancers (20.9 percent) have a working week of less than 40 hours. Exactly 40 hours per week, the average working time of a permanent employee, is worked by 7.2% of those surveyed.

3. do you feel that your work as a freelancer is compatible with your family or private life compared to a permanent position?
More than half of the freelancers surveyed feel that their self-employment is better suited to balancing work with their family or private life compared to a permanent position. The two answer options "better" (25.4%) and "much better" (27.2%) were mentioned almost equally frequently. For a cumulative 33.4 percent, self-employment is less suitable for balancing work and private life, and for 15.1 percent it is even much worse. In this question, 14.1% see no difference between freelancing and permanent employment.

4. was the issue of compatibility with family or private life a reason to switch to freelance work or is it a reason to switch back from freelance work to a permanent position?
For half of the freelancers surveyed, the compatibility of work with family or private life was not a reason to switch to self-employment, nor is it a reason to return to a permanent position. In contrast, 39.1 percent have given up their permanent position in favor of freelancing for this reason. In contrast, only one in ten would return to the role of employee.

5 What values do you live by? (multiple answers possible)
Unsurprisingly, "self-determination" is the most frequently mentioned value that freelancers base their lives on - for 75.6% of survey participants, this is important. For almost two thirds, "success and recognition" is also a key motivation in their own lives. This is followed by "fun and enjoyment" with 53.7% and "health" with 48.9%, closely followed by "leisure and vacation" (48.1%). Values such as "family and partnership" and "friendship" were only mentioned by less than 40% of respondents in each case, but are still ahead of "work" and "wealth/luxury". In the free text responses under "Other", religion and spirituality were also named as important values that guide people's lives.

6. what difficulties do you see in trying to reconcile your private life with your work as a freelancer? (multiple answers possible)
For more than half of the survey participants, "traveling" is the biggest obstacle to balancing work and family life, putting it at the top of the list. A third see the "project workload" (36.7 percent) and "economic uncertainty" (35.8 percent) as major burdens. Around a quarter have problems in the areas of "administrative workload" (25.9 percent) and "constant electronic availability" (24.7 percent). Only 12.3% have no difficulties in reconciling work and family life. The option to provide free text responses was only used marginally and is therefore not explained separately.
