Ringier Media Switzerland cuts 55 instead of 75 jobs

Following the conclusion of the consultation process, the number of positions to be eliminated at Ringier Medien Schweiz has been reduced from 75 to 55. A severance plan will be implemented for the affected employees.

On January 9, 2024, the Executive Board of Ringier Media Switzerland (RMS) announced the planned reduction of a total of 75 jobs (advertisingweek.ch reported) and opened the consultation process. Over the following two weeks, the two staff committees of Ringier AG and Ringier Magazine AG (formerly Ringier Axel Springer Schweiz AG) as well as all employees had the opportunity to submit proposals with which the planned redundancies could be avoided, implemented to a lesser extent or mitigated.

20 jobs secured

Over the past few days, the RMS management has thoroughly reviewed and evaluated the feasibility of the proposals. Measures such as reducing workloads, eliminating vacancies and making organizational adjustments have made it possible to reduce the planned reduction by 20 jobs. A total of 55 redundancies were announced, evenly distributed between employees of Ringier AG and Ringier Magazine AG. These include 14 positions of employees who offered to leave the company as well as early retirements. The Ringier AG social plan applies to all affected employees.

Impressum, the professional association of Swiss media professionals, expressed regret that 55 jobs will ultimately be cut after all. The cuts could have been avoided in the media group, which is actually profitable, Impressum wrote in a press release on Monday. The contribution to savings made by top executives had been too small and synergies had been underutilized.

The Syndicom trade union has also criticized the job cuts, but welcomed the fact that Ringier has responded to the staff's alternative proposals. Ringier must now negotiate a fair social plan in order to minimize the impact on those affected, the union wrote on Monday. (SDA)
