Planted: Now comes the vegan bratwurst

Just in time for the start of barbecue season, the Swiss food tech startup Planted is launching its first plant-based sausage. It consists of six natural ingredients and, according to Planted, reduces CO2 emissions by 71 percent and water use by 79 percent.

Planted is expanding its barbecue range with Planted Bratwurst, its first plant-based sausage. It is designed to be a more sustainable and healthier alternative to traditional grilling, the company says. With six natural ingredients, it is the cleanest sausage on the market, it says, and contains 76 percent less saturated fat and 18 percent less salt, but 36 percent more protein than an animal-based bratwurst.

An additional fermentation step in the manufacturing process developed by Planted gives the product its flavor. In this way, the start-up is keeping up with the times, as more and more people want to eat more sustainably and reduce their consumption of animal meat.
