Ulrich Bollmann: Burson-Marsteller Switzerland wants to cultivate domestic quality in an international contextHead of the week "Creating additional values without giving up existing ones".
He had already been CEO Switzerland at the PR agency Burson-Marsteller since the beginning of 1999. The fact that a new captain, Ulrich Bollmann, had taken the helm was only noticed when Dieter Jäggi announced that his name would be eliminated from the logo.
The agency, which was founded by Jäggi and merged two years ago with the Y-&-R subsidiary Burson-Marsteller international, is to be a fully-fledged member of the world's leading public relations group, even when visible to the outside world.
"We will fall behind as a national leader if we cannot argue to customers that we also offer abroad what we do in Switzerland," says Ulrich Bollmann.
This process of integrating the company into the global network did not take place as a "fire drill," but was a process that is still ongoing in parts. "We want to continue to cultivate our successful values and complement them with the international framework," is how the new CEO formulates his corporate goal. He defines Corporate Communications, Investor Relations as well as Healthcare/Biotechnology, Public Affairs and Marketing Communications/Advertising as business areas. This communications approach is also reflected in the fact that Burson-Marsteller is a member of both the BPRA and the BSW.
The introduction of the compact disc for Philips in the 1980s, the transformation of the old Hoffmann-La Roche into the new Roche holding structure, and later the entire communications support for the Volksbank/SKA merger and the transformation into Credit Suisse were mandates that Bollmann points to with pride.
"The change management of such organizations fascinates me," says the PR man. Such long-term and complex projects are more rewarding for him today than the more short-term work as a journalist. Until 1981, Bollmann deliberately shuttled between the fronts. After he had built up the press and information office of the Accident Directors' Conference in 1974, he moved to the HandelsZeitung as deputy editor-in-chief. The economist earned his doctorate in 1972 on the subject of "Ten Years of the Euro Capital Market.
Bollmann has always combined his main job with sideline activities. For many years, he was the commander of the Press and Radio Department (APF), founding president of the Zugerland Lions Club in 1983, and today he is a member of the board of directors of the Lucerne-based LZ Media Group, as well as chairman of the board of directors of the Parkhotel in Zug and of a wine trading company. His four children, however, find him totally weird when the old man goes snooping all by himself. Andreas Panzeri
