Last but not least: Football to Football Translator

The world is talking about soccer. Americans want to join the conversation, but they're struggling with the vocabulary. A browser translation plugin comes to the rescue.

It is a cliché that North Americans are not interested in football. However, the fact that soccer occupies one of the bottom places on the list of sports priorities in the United States is not. Soccer is popular among young people as an active sport, the American MLS league is on the rise and the national team is no longer an outsider at international tournaments. The USA has been a world leader in women's soccer for years. Nevertheless, compared to baseball, basketball, ice hockey and, above all, American football, soccer is of little interest.

After the Olympic Games, the World Cup is considered the most important sporting event in the world. Good if you can have a say. Not so good if you don't know the first thing about soccer. But don't despair, dear Americans. Resourceful creatives have developed an add-on for the Chrome browser that translates soccer Chinese ("The Sissy World Cup Lingo") into tried and tested football vocabulary: "The Football to Football Translator". Once installed, expressions and names of any English-language websites are highlighted in green and explained in a pop-up. For example, the interested greenhorn learns that head coaches in football are called "managers" and why they often wear fancy suits: "A lot of them wear fancy suits because they're fancy." Or that the English are "perennial, overrated failures" who won once a long time ago and have been talking big ever since. There's not really much to add. It is unclear whether there is a viral campaign behind the add-on. (hae)
