Knabenschiessen 2024: Waste heroes in action against littering

The Knabenschiessen is not only all about marksmanship and tradition, but also about a clean festival site. For years, the IGSU (Interest Group for a Clean Environment) has been motivating visitors to dispose of waste correctly with witty campaigns and creative posters. But how successful are the measures really?

"At the Knabenschiessen, passers-by have declared their opposition to littering on the white IGSU poster."

The Knabenschiessen in Zurich is not only a festival of marksmen, but also a fight against littering. For years, the City of Zurich's shooting club has relied on a wide range of measures to keep the waste situation under control during the event. These include close cooperation with stand operators, a comprehensive waste disposal infrastructure and a deposit system for reusable cups. The commitment of the IGSU ambassador teams plays a special role: with humor and creativity, they motivate visitors to the Chilbi to take a stand against littering.

"Funny sayings and drawings are often created, especially in groups, because the revelers want to inspire and outdo each other," says Cédric Québatte, team leader of the IGSU ambassadors. But silent supporters also leave impressive poetry on the posters. The will to dispose of waste correctly is present among most visitors, confirms site manager Heinz Büttler: "With a well thought-out waste disposal concept and the support of the IGSU, we ensure a clean festival."

Sustainable impact through awareness-raising

The IGSU ambassador teams are a tried and tested part of the commitment against littering. They have been touring Switzerland since 2007, humorously sensitizing the population to environmentally conscious behaviour. The ambassadors continue their mission not only at fairs, but also on hiking trails, in ski resorts and at school workshops. With the support of cities, municipalities and schools, the IGSU helps to raise awareness of the littering problem and promote sustainable solutions.

For a clean Switzerland: IGSU Clean-Up-Day 2024

In addition to the ambassador missions, the IGSU is also involved in other preventative measures such as the national Clean-Up Day, which will take place on September 13 and 14, 2024. This is supported by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN, the Pusch Foundation and other partners. The IGSU provides teachers with free teaching materials and offers cities, municipalities and schools advice and support in carrying out space sponsorship projects. With campaigns in all parts of the country and the No Littering label, the IGSU sends out a strong signal for a clean environment.
