Woolmark launches global campaign: "Wear Wool, Not Waste" - An appeal for sustainable fashion
With its new «Wear Wool, Not Waste» campaign, Woolmark is sending a strong message against fast fashion and in favor of eco-friendly alternatives. The campaign focuses on merino wool as a natural, renewable, and biodegradable fiber that has the potential to transform the fashion industry.
The global campaign "Wear Wool, Not Waste", launched by Woolmark in September 2024, focuses on the environmentally friendly properties of wool. At a time when legislative action is being taken to curb the increasing waste caused by synthetic clothing, the campaign is a reminder that wool is the better choice. Synthetic fibers, which were introduced less than 200 years ago, could account for up to 73 percent of global fiber production by 2030 - a worrying trend that the campaign addresses.
The TV commercial dramatically shows how people are fleeing a "zombie invasion" of synthetic garments that are still polluting our environment. This graphic comparison makes it clear that synthetic garments take hundreds of years to decompose. In contrast, wool is a biodegradable and recyclable alternative.
John Roberts, Managing Director of Woolmark, aptly summarizes the urgency of the campaign: "Wear Wool, Not Waste is more than a marketing campaign. It is an appeal to consumers and the industry to rethink their fiber choices. Merino wool offers a sustainable solution to the fashion industry's environmental impact."
With this campaign, Woolmark is also promoting the "Filter by Fabric" initiative, which aims to help consumers make more conscious purchasing decisions by using correct fabric labels on e-commerce platforms. The aim is to establish wool as a solution to the fashion industry's impact on the environment, supported by the recently launched "Woolmark+ Roadmap" plan.
A YouTube comment underlines the importance of this message: "This campaign reminds us that advertising not only sells products, but also influences decisions."
The campaign was launched in Australia in September 2024 by "The Woolmark Company" and launched by the advertising agency 20Something created.
