ewz and Studio Marvin Hugentobler are turning Lake Zurich into a heat source

ewz is drawing attention to sustainable heating solutions with a surprising campaign: An oversized hot water bottle filled with water from Lake Zurich has become a symbol of innovative heat generation from the lake.

Instead of relying on fossil fuels such as oil and gas, ewz is turning to an innovative and environmentally friendly alternative: heating with water from Lake Zurich. To raise public awareness of this still relatively unknown technology, the energy utility is launching a new campaign, creatively developed by Studio Marvin Hugentobler.

At the heart of the campaign is a striking key visual: an oversized hot water bottle set against the panoramic backdrop of the city of Zurich in the morning light. The transformation of a familiar everyday object into a symbol of sustainable energy generation makes the technically complex topic of lake water heating accessible and emotionally engaging.

«Focusing on a single theme ensures maximum brand recognition throughout the entire, carefully curated customer journey,» explains Katrin Rüesch, Senior Campaign Manager at ewz. The campaign will be visible in Zurich starting October 13, 2025, on billboards, on public transportation, and across various digital channels.

The team at ewz responsible for the campaign includes Katrin Rüesch (Senior Campaign Manager), Adrian Furger (Head of Campaigning & Branding), and Pascal Schaub (Head of Marketing & Communications). On the creative side, the campaign was produced by Studio Marvin Hugentobler, with Marvin Hugentobler (Creative Director), Maria Gysi (Motion Design & 3D), Ricardo Perret of Birdviewpicture (Photography & Video), and Dominik Locher (Animation).
