The digital advertising world keeps moving - and YouTube with it. To mark its 20th anniversary, the platform invited the international press community to Zurich to provide exclusive insights into the future of its advertising. A celebration of successes, but also a stocktaking: YouTube is now fitter than ever, but is also facing new challenges - growing competition, shorter attention spans and regulatory pressure, especially in Europe.

Dyana Najdi, Managing Director, Google Advertising UKI, outlined the transformation of the platform at the YouTube EMEA Press Event. YouTube has developed from a pure desktop portal into a global multi-format ecosystem with shorts, long-form videos and TV integration. A transformation that is also being driven forward in Switzerland - the largest YouTube development center outside the USA.

"Every change in user behavior is a turning point for our platform. We have to rethink products in order to offer all players an optimal advertising environment," says Najdi.

The art of digital advertising: ABCD as a formula for success

A central topic was the ABCD framework (Attention, Branding, Connection, Direction), which YouTube developed by analyzing over 100,000 advertising experiments.

  • Attention: Capture attention right from the start.
  • Branding: Position the brand early and clearly.
  • Connection: Creating an emotional bond through storytelling.
  • Direction: Integrate a clear call to action.

As an example, Najdi presented the legendary Evian "Live Young" campaign, which became the most viewed online advertisement in 2009 with 45 million views. "This campaign was a milestone because it was designed for the digital environment and not just a TV commercial transferred to the web," she emphasized.

Storytelling: the currency of digital advertising

In a world where users can choose between countless types of content, creative storytelling remains the decisive factor for successful advertising.

"We are all competing for attention. The best way to stand out from the crowd is great storytelling," explained Najdi. The Evian example is a prime example of timeless creativity. Authentic stories that trigger emotions and build a strong brand image are becoming increasingly important in the fragmented media landscape.

AI as a game changer in advertising strategy

The integration of AI in advertising solutions was another focus of the event. Google is increasingly relying on AI-supported formats such as video reach campaigns, which automatically select the optimal ad format to achieve the greatest reach at the best price.

Najdi explained: "We wanted to combine the effectiveness of Google Search with the magic of YouTube. AI makes it possible to manage campaigns more intelligently and distribute advertising content more efficiently."

AI offers new opportunities for smaller companies in particular: Automatic video format adjustments, AI-generated voice-overs and auto-dubbing facilitate access to the professional advertising world.

Shorts and connected TV: the future of video formats

The consumption of YouTube content has changed dramatically. Shorts are now the fastest growing format, even on the TV screen. In the US, 15 % of all shorts views already take place in the living room.

"The shorts revolution shows that short content is also successful on large screens. This presents advertisers with new challenges, but also offers enormous opportunities," says Najdi.

But it's not just shorts that dominate the TV experience on YouTube. More and more users are switching from linear television to connected TVs, which opens up completely new opportunities for advertisers.

"YouTube is now a central part of the TV experience," explained Najdi. Advertisers who previously only relied on linear television must now think digital-first. "YouTube offers a platform that enables both branding and performance campaigns and allows for more precise targeting than traditional TV."

YouTube and TV partnerships: Cooperation with broadcasters

The boundaries between YouTube and traditional television are becoming increasingly blurred. YouTube cooperates with TV broadcasters to make content seamlessly available across platforms.

"Many major broadcasters use YouTube to make their content accessible to a wider audience and thus generate additional reach," explained Najdi. The platform not only offers another distribution network, but also expanded monetization opportunities for TV producers.

YouTube is also experimenting with new advertising formats that appeal to both digital and linear TV viewers. Hybrid campaigns enable brands to place their message across platforms and thus create new synergies between traditional television and online video.

Long-form videos: The underestimated success factor

In addition to shorts and TV formats, long-form videos also remain a central component of the YouTube ecosystem. While short content attracts attention quickly, longer formats offer the opportunity to build deeper emotional connections and tell more complex stories.

"Longer videos offer brands a platform for detailed storytelling. They make it possible to deal with topics in depth and create lasting brand loyalty," says Najdi.

According to YouTube data, many of the most successful advertising videos are not only short and snappy, but also available in long-form versions. Longer formats are essential, especially for products that require explanation or image campaigns.

Performance vs. branding: the right balance

Many advertisers are faced with the challenge of balancing their budgets between performance and branding campaigns.

"The most successful campaigns combine both: short-term performance goals with long-term brand building," says Najdi. While performance marketing aims to achieve direct conversions, branding is crucial for the long-term success of a brand.

One example of this is Marks & Spencer's campaign in the UK. The traditional brand invested heavily in branding measures on YouTube to appeal to a younger target group - with measurable success.

"YouTube enables advertisers to flexibly switch between performance and branding strategies and combine both to achieve sustainable results," explained Najdi.

The next wave of innovation

A look into the future: YouTube continues to invest in AI-powered advertising. The GenAI tool "VEO" will enable advertisers to generate complete advertising videos via text prompt.

"AI will not replace human creativity, it will support it," explained Najdi. "The future lies in the combination of technological progress and great storytelling."
