Are IT departments innovative enough?

"The IT department spends around half of its time on routine and standard tasks. After deducting other activities, an average of just 30 percent of time is spent on IT projects and implementing new processes," comments Henrik Gross from analyst firm Techconsult on the result.More time for new processesIn order to meet the current challenges in companies, IT departments should plan more time for IT projects, new processes and business development. One starting point for this could be to reduce the high cost of routine activities through automation, for example in client management. According to most respondents, this could reduce costs by up to 40 percent. A positive side effect would also be that errors could be reduced. "The high proportion of routine activities not only ties up staff unnecessarily, which could drive innovation. Automation can also reduce errors, for example in backup processes, which ultimately also leads to an improvement in service quality and IT security."To ensure that companies are not left behind in the digital transformation, they should ensure that the IT department becomes the hub of innovation and business development in the company. The majority of the IT department's time should be spent on driving innovation in the company. By automating routine activities, the effort involved in client management can be reduced and the time freed up can be invested in innovative IT projects. The study was conducted by Techconsult on behalf of Aagon in May 2017. It was based on an online survey of 200 companies from all sectors with 100 or more clients. The contact persons were people who could make statements about client management, mainly from the areas of IT, management and board level and senior employees.
