Charlie Hebdo publishes comic book on Mohammed
The French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo has repeatedly caused a stir with its provocative cartoons of Muhammad. Now the newspaper has published a comic book about the prophet’s life. And Ahmed sings «Jingle Bombs.».
The comic book is entitled "The Life of Mohammed". According to SDA, it hit the newsstands on Wednesday. According to the makers, the booklet is neither caricature nor satire, but a meticulous report based on precise sources. Charlie Hebdo boss Charb said last week that it was a "biography authorized by Islam, as it was edited by Muslims."
The newspaper last provoked angry reactions from Muslims who reject depictions of the founder of the religion in September with the publication of some crude Muhammad cartoons. The cartoons were printed when there were bloody protests in numerous Muslim countries against the film "The Innocence of Muslims", which was produced in the USA and was critical of Islam. The government in Paris is said to have tightened security measures for French institutions in Muslim countries for fear of violent protests against the "Charlie Hebdo" cartoons.
In November 2011, the editorial offices of Charlie Hebdo were set on fire and the website hacked after the publication of a special edition entitled "Sharia Hebdo", which contained cartoons of Mohammed. French government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said today, Wednesday, with regard to the new comic strip, that there must be a "balance" between the right to freedom of expression and respect for public order. According to SDA, she told France 2 that it was also important to avoid "pouring oil on the fire", but she did not want to judge the comic book as she said she had not yet seen it.
