Ostschweiz am Sonntag appeared for the first time

As of Sunday, the Swiss media landscape has gained a new publication: *Ostschweiz am Sonntag* was published for the first time.

The seventh issue of the St. Galler Tagblatt and its head and partner papers focuses on events in eastern Switzerland (Werbewoche.ch reported). "Placing our main focus on eastern Switzerland does not, of course, mean that we put on blinkers and ignore what is happening to our left and right," write the Tagblatt management and editors-in-chief in the first issue.

Ostschweiz am Sonntag is published as a uniform seventh edition of St. Galler Tagblatt, Thurgauer Zeitung, Appenzeller Zeitung, Toggenburger Tagblatt, Der Rheintaler, Wiler Zeitung and Werdenberger & Obertoggenburger. The target is a Sunday circulation of at least 90'000 copies. The paper is divided into four bundles with editorial content and one bundle as a job advertiser. The pagination of Ostschweiz am Sonntag is looser than that of the St. Galler Tagblatt with fewer but wider columns. The proportion of pictures is also larger.

The Bund Reflexe is opened with a big interview with the First Public Prosecutor of the Canton of St. Gallen, Thomas Hansjakob. Topic: The ultra scene of the St. Gallen soccer club. Also included is a backgrounder on the decline of Bank Wegelin and the legacy of its co-owner Konrad Hummler at Notenstein.

Ostschweiz am Sonntag is the eighth Sunday newspaper in German-speaking Switzerland. With the merger of Südostschweiz am Sonntag and Sonntag, another title will disappear on March 24. From then on, the two papers will appear as Schweiz am Sonntag. (SDA)

Last but not least: Facebook and the advertising successes

Facebook has acquired Microsoft's Atlas online advertising technology and can now use this platform to better measure the effectiveness of ads. This should put all doubts about Facebook's advertising success to rest—or does it?

Microsoft's online advertising technology is intended to help boost online advertising revenues and stand up to rivals such as Google, according to an SDA report on Friday. The world's largest social network did not disclose how much Facebook is paying for the technology on Thursday. It doesn't matter, the main thing is that Facebook has now found a solution to dispel doubts about its own advertising success. Or is that not quite so certain after all? In any case, Microsoft has not been able to benefit from the technology itself. According to SDA, the company acquired the technology when it took over the online advertising specialist aQuantive in 2007 for 6.3 billion dollars. In July last year, the group wrote off 6.2 billion dollars on aQuantive. (uma)

Bollmann's plans for the Baz

Rolf Bollmann has been the managing director of Basler Zeitung Medien since September 2012. He spoke with the NZZ am Sonntag about his plans for the Baz.

Circulation of the Baz fell by more than 10 percent in 2012, Rolf Bollmann told the NZZ am Sonntag. He assumes that this decline in circulation will be reflected in the next readership figures in the fall of 2013. However, this should mean that the low point has been reached: there are some indications that circulation will at least stabilize, Bollmann added. However, he does not want to reveal to NZZ am Sonntag how he intends to break the downward trend. This remains his secret. At least it is clear that something has to happen.

However, Bollmann is convinced in an interview with the NZZ am Sonntag that the quality of the newspaper has clearly increased. Critical Basel residents and even enemies of Christoph Blocher would say the same. Today, he says, the Baz is an open forum newspaper and no longer a left-wing paper.

The cooperation with Tamedia (Werbewoche.ch reported) in no way means that the Baz will no longer remain independent, Bollmann emphasizes. Since the cooperation with Tamedia is of central importance to Basler Zeitung Medien, he also does not rule out entering into further cooperations with Tamedia or other partners.
