UBS is allowed to advertise almost exclusively at the University of Zurich

UBS is financing the establishment of a research center in the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich with CHF 100 million. In return, the bank will have a far-reaching presence at the university - and not just the "UBS Foundation", which was created as a sponsor for the new center. This emerges from the partially redacted contract, which was posted on the Internet on Monday. The disclosure of the previously secret contract had been enforced by two journalists of the weekly newspaper (Woz) and the Swiss edition of the Zeit.

UBS-labeled lecture halls "to be tested"

The agreement provides for extensive integration of the UBS Center into the Department of Economics - both in terms of location and content. For example, according to the agreement, the university is to "consider" setting up a lecture hall labeled "UBS International Center Lecture Hall" in which all of the department's lectures are to be held. According to the university, however, there will be no such lecture hall. The contract states that the bank will "reasonably benefit." This includes that professors and assistants sponsored by the bank will have to attend events of the new center, but also appear at the bank's "UBS International Economic Forum." In addition, selected clients and employees of the bank will be given privileged access to events of the new center, and the bank-sponsored researchers are to regularly exchange ideas with specialists from the bank. With these arrangements, not only the new UBS center but the entire Department of Economics at the publicly funded university would be strongly associated with the bank's brand in the future.

No other major sponsors

The contract states that the Department of Economics may not enter into other sponsorship arrangements that are "of comparable size or similar visibility." Individual chairs may be sponsored. For third-party sponsorships at the UBS Center itself, UBS approval must be obtained. The contract guarantees sponsored researchers to be allowed to "conduct their teaching and research activities autonomously." The university may also appoint professors independently and also finance them - UBS has no influence on personnel decisions. However, the UBS Foundation decides which subject area it sponsors. The contract continues to be blacked out, especially passages with information on financial regulations. The contract should have remained secret until the two journalists demanded its disclosure via the cantonal information law. After the university refused to do so, they succeeded in getting the Appeals Commission of the Zurich Universities (Reko) to require that the other provisions of the contract be disclosed as well. New LGK: Happier Swiss chickens

The new commercial from the Neue LGK agency aims to further reduce the market share of importers and strengthen the Swiss chicken.

Since 2010, Neue LGK has been successfully promoting the Swiss egg with the claim "The happiest hens lay the best eggs." So successful, in fact, that Swiss market share for shell eggs has increased to 74.4 percent, despite competition from imported eggs that are nearly half as expensive. According to the press release, the positioning gets to the heart of what laying hens in Switzerland have over their counterparts abroad: good feed, stricter husbandry and health standards and, as far as possible, care in family-run farms. The agency illustrated this in an initial spot with a group of chickens enjoying their greater freedom of movement, upbeat and in time to the song "Oh happy Day!". The film scored top marks in the AMS (Agro-Marketing Suisse) advertising effectiveness check year after year. In spring 2013, it was 80 percent for likeability and as many as 92.5 percent felt the film appealed to them.

Swisscom launches security check for smartphones

With Checkap, Swisscom is launching an app that thoroughly checks all the programs installed on a smartphone. Checkap also provides recommendations on how to effectively protect your phone from misuse.

Some apps are careless with our data and request more information and permissions than they actually need. For example, a flashlight app does not need access to contact data. A children's game app does not need to transmit your location, especially not unencrypted. With Checkap, customers can uncover such security gaps. Swisscom wants to help customers better understand how their apps handle personal data and device functions and identify potential risks. All apps are given a rating, which is explained in an easy-to-understand way using color codes and text.

According to the press release, Checkap is available in two versions for Android devices and iPhone. The central element of the Android app is a scanner. This subjects the installed apps to an in-depth check and immediately identifies potential vulnerabilities, such as critical access to functions or data. Checkap makes a behavioral recommendation and, where possible, suggests alternative, more secure apps. On the iPhone, it lists the most popular apps and displays their rating. Other apps can be easily searched for and saved in a personal list.

Careful handling of personal data is becoming increasingly important in the modern networked world. Checkap is the first app developed by Swisscom to help customers easily identify data protection problems and act accordingly. The apps installed on the smartphone are evaluated according to various criteria based on their core function. In doing so, Swisscom relies on test results from the company Appthority, among others. Appthority is active in the field of risk management for mobile apps and primarily serves business customers worldwide in order to assess and guarantee the security and data protection of apps used by employees. Checkap is now available free of charge from Google Play and the Apple App Store.

UPC Cablecom CEO does not get a word in edgewise

In the new TV commercial from UPC Cablecom and Manifesto Films, the CEO himself appears on camera—a first for Switzerland!

For about a week now, Eric Tveter, CEO of UPC Cablecom, has been posing in front of the camera for a commercial together with advertising ambassador Carlos Leal. Even though the actor barely lets Eric Tveter get a word in edgewise, the commercial is a first. "Never before in Switzerland has a CEO of a major company stood in front of the camera in a commercial and made a customer promise," says Beat Fingerhuth, Director Marketing Communication at UPC Cablecom. "We wanted to be the first company to do that; it humanizes our brand."

The idea to appear in a commercial came from the CEO himself, he said. "Eric wanted to give our company a face. We've achieved a lot in the past few years and now we want to get that out there." The commercial was shot in late September. Tveter and Leal harmonized excellently in front of the camera, Fingerhuth says. "The clip was shot within six hours in all three languages." The idea and concept for the spot came from Beat Fingerhuth (UPC Cablecom) and Reto Salimbeni (Manifesto Films).

Ringier launches Landliebe TV and Landliebe Radio

The hit show "Schweizer Landliebe" is expanding into new media: "Landliebe TV" will launch on Sat.1 Switzerland on Sunday, March 2, 2014. "Landliebe Radio" will go on the air as early as Monday, December 2, 2013.

Schweizer Landliebe is a success story with rising circulation and sales figures. According to the press release, the magazine is decelerating, romantic, generous - and very Swiss. The same goes for LandLiebe TV. It is filmed against a backdrop of beautiful Swiss landscapes. The top themes from print form the backbone of the stories - feel-good documentary reports as a "window" into our homeland. Landliebe TV has the courage to be slow. People will be at the center of all content. The format will be broadcast every Sunday at 8 p.m. on Sat.1 Switzerland. Twelve shows, each twelve minutes long, are planned for the first season. The repeat will appear on the Saturday of the following week, also at 8 pm.

Landliebe Radio also focuses on tradition, wants to convey well-being and be a place of retreat in a hectic everyday world. The music program allows for a wide range: French- and Italian-language songs reflect the cultural diversity of Switzerland; the classical repertoire from Aretha Franklin to Eric Clapton to the Bee Gees combines organically with the timeless repertoire of today's artists such as Norah Jones or Adele. LandLiebe Radio can be heard on DAB+, online stream and via mobile app. The format is produced in close cooperation between the LandLiebe editorial team and Energy Switzerland. Michael Voss, COO of Ringier and Head of Ringier Entertainment: "We are delighted to further develop the Swiss Landliebe brand on two channels at once and to breathe movement and sound into it as a new TV and radio program."

Landbote: Weko approves purchase by Tamedia

Tamedia may purchase the Winterthur daily newspaper Der Landbote. The Swiss Federal Competition Commission (ComCo) has approved the takeover. The ComCo has classified the purchase as unobjectionable and approved it without conditions, Tamedia announced on Tuesday.

Tamedia announced in August that it was buying a majority stake in Ziegler Druck- und Verlags-AG, which publishes the Landbote (Werbewoche.ch reported). The Zurich-based group intends to acquire 90.5 percent of the shares by the beginning of 2014. According to the press release, talks will be held "in the coming weeks" with the individual shareholder who owns the remaining 9.5 percent. Uncertainty had prevailed for a long time after the owner family of Ziegler Druck- und Verlags-AG announced its intention to sell. Tamedia had already acquired a 20 percent stake in the Winterthur-based media company, which currently has 230 employees, in 2005. It is now buying a further 70.5 percent of the shares for 49.6 million Swiss francs. The purchase agreement was not negotiated by Tamedia, but by another potential buyer, but Tamedia exercised its right of first refusal.
use. The media company is thus acquiring the share package on the terms negotiated by its competitor.

"Third strong newspaper voice in the canton of Zurich"

With the takeover, all activities and employees will be transferred to Tamedia. In addition to the Landbote (circulation of just under 32,000 copies) and the free newspaper Winterthurer Stadtanzeiger (circulation of 64,000 copies), this also includes the print shop specializing in magazines and business stationery as well as various properties. Tamedia announces that it will continue its cooperation with its partners Zürcher Oberländer, Zürcher Unterländer and Zürichsee-Zeitung. According to Tamedia, the Zürcher Regionalzeitungen (ZRZ) newspaper association will be retained as the "third strong newspaper voice in the canton of Zurich".

No job cuts

The newspaper group will work together with the Berner Zeitung on foreign and domestic reporting. The number of editorial offices in Winterthur is not expected to change significantly as a result. However, as already announced, there will be relocations within the editorial offices of Landbote, Zürcher Unterländer, Zürichsee-Zeitung and the ZRZ editorial office, according to Tamedia. How the editorial, publishing and service areas will be organized will be determined once the takeover has been completed in the first quarter of 2014, according to the press release. The future prospects of the print shop will be examined over the course of next year. Tamedia will examine whether the initial situation can be improved through additional printing orders from third parties and from its own media. (SDA)

Advertising locomotive: The largest invitation card in Switzerland

«Switzerland's largest invitation card» invites your guests from all over the country to Air 14 Payerne. The new SBB promotional locomotive for the Swiss Air Force Airshow is one of a maximum of 24 promotional locomotives operating on long-distance routes.

Laurent Savary, Head of Communications Air 14, explains why he is using an SBB advertising locomotive for the event celebrating the centenary of the Swiss Air Force: "As a partner of the Air 14 air show, SBB is not only responsible for transporting thousands of visitors, but also for providing the platform for ticket sales. Therefore, the use of this space as an advertising medium is a natural choice. The locomotive will be present throughout Switzerland, in the major metropolitan areas and in the periphery."

His expectations of the unusual advertising space are correspondingly high: "A large proportion of the Swiss population travels by train every day. A locomotive with an attractive design on such an advertising medium reaches a large audience: both the passengers and the passers-by along the route. This is even more important for an event that is not held every year, but only selectively." More information on costs and potential can be found at. Sbb.ch/commercial-locomotive
