Swisscows introduces video search

Five months after its launch, Swisscows already has 800,000 unique users and 3.5 million page impressions per month. The Swiss search engine is now integrating YouTube, making it possible to search for video clips.

With the Swisscows search engine, which was successfully launched five months ago, users can now search for and find video films in addition to text and images. "As a result of user growth in Switzerland, Germany and Austria, we were increasingly approached with the request for a video search" explains Swisscows operator Andreas Wiebe. From now on, videos with previews will be displayed in the search results. "A separate sorting according to common criteria makes it easy to get an overview", says Andreas Wiebe. Web, image and video search are thereby completely anonymous for users, neither the IP address nor other data are stored or further used. First, the entire content of Youtube is included in the Swisscows search index. The search for videos is anonymous. If the video is opened, the anonymity ends. "We warn users before they leave Swisscows that their IP address will be stored by Youtube," Wiebe explains.

Answers through semantic search

Swisscows also offers a sorting of videos by relevance, date, popularity and views. A preview image gives a first insight into the video. In the coming months, Swisscows will also be working on its own index for moving images on the Internet, in addition to its own complete search index. The technology is based on semantic search and is able to make further suggestions to the searcher about the searched term. A data cloud offers relevant refinements to the searched term in a tile view. The search time is reduced.

Blick journalist wants acquittal

A *Blick* journalist is alleged to have illegally obtained police photos in 2011 following a rape case in St. Gallen. The Wil District Court sentenced him to a suspended fine. On Monday, the journalist asked the Cantonal Court to acquit him.

The verdict is expected to be announced on Tuesday. In May 2011, Blick had reported on the arrest of two cab drivers in St. Gallen who were accused of rape. The report was illustrated with photos of the suspects. However, one of the two men pictured was innocent. A cantonal police officer had given the photos to a private detective and thus violated official secrecy. The private detective, in turn, was allegedly incited by the Blick journalist to illegally obtain the pictures. In 2013, the District Court of Wil sentenced all three parties to conditional fines.

Detective and police officer accepted penalties

The detective (240 daily sentences) and the policeman (45 daily sentences) accepted their sentences. Both are no longer working in their former professions. The journalist challenged his conditional fine of 60 daily sentences, so that the Cantonal Court now had to deal with the case. The journalist answered the questions of the court chairman only partially. His defense attorney demanded an acquittal. The journalist had neither wanted nor known that the private detective had incited a police officer to violate official secrecy. He had merely asked the detective if he knew anything about the case.

Damages and satisfaction

The lawyer of the cab driver who was wrongly denounced in the newspaper claimed damages of 10,000 francs in court. He also demanded 20,000 francs in compensation for his client. The publication of the photos had been an "extremely blatant" violation of personality. The public prosecutor asked the cantonal court to dismiss the journalist's appeal. The Blick employee had known that the private detective - himself a former police officer - had good contacts with the police. The detective had also provided the tabloid with information from police sources in another case. (SDA)

TV, Internet and Digital out of Home prove themselves

Advertising spending: TV and the Internet remain as strong as ever, and digital out-of-home is back on a growth trajectory. Radio and teletext, on the other hand, are showing a slight decline in a stable market.

This is shown by the October edition of the Goldbach Index (Gemm) for advertising pressure in the overall market and electronic media.

Internet once again held its own in October compared to the previous month with an increase of five index points 758 (753). Digital out of Home also increased by five index points to 738 (733) and is thus back on course for growth. The increase in the TV sector was stable with a rise of two index points compared to the previous month 649 (647).

Radio remains under pressure with a loss of three index points 404 (407) and Teletext with a drop of one index point 50 (51)

The overall market remained at the previous month's level with 237 index points, while advertising pressure in the electronic media as a whole rose by one index point to 647 (646).

Last but not least: What you like to listen to most

The music streaming service Deezer is coming to Germany soon. As part of its launch campaign, it is airing two more TV commercials. They follow up on the first two and depict everyday situations in which a young man only listens to what he wants to hear.

Sometimes everything is better in your own head cinema: for example, the blonde at the bar doesn't get annoyed when you stare at her cleavage, but actually invites you to touch her. It's much easier to dream with your own soundtrack in your ears - only the woman's facial expressions tell a different story. (sis)

In the cell phone duel

The Basel-based agency Eyeloveyou designed and implemented the «Handy-Chef» prevention campaign for the Basel-Stadt Department of Health.

For the safe use of smartphones, the agency designed the "Handy- Chef" quiz, which is intended to give the target group a playful understanding of the entire range of problems - topics such as money, addiction, privacy and radiation play an important role.

Eyeloveyou created a face, a name and the mobile website for the campaign handychef.chwhere the quiz takes place. The "cell phone boss" is not only sought among the participants of the quiz, but is personified at the center of the campaign: as a many-armed Western hero who presents symbols for the various aspects of the topic in his hands.

The quiz on the mobile website not only entices with fame and glory in a duel, but also with monthly prizes such as iTunes or Google Play vouchers, as well as cinema vouchers with a total value of CHF 400. The site is advertised to specific target groups via Facebook ads and precise user segmentation on Teleboy.ch.

Eyeloveyou also produced a western-style cinema spot: The cell phone boss faces a duel in the cinema spot in front of a sunset and cactus landscape - accompanied by a specially composed western soundtrack. Tension is built up in high-noon style until the climax - but instead of a colt, the cell phone boss pulls out a smartphone.

Responsible at the Department of Health of the Canton of Basel-Stadt: Anja Ramp (Program Manager Addiction Prevention), Christina Karpf (Head of Health Promotion and Prevention), Eva de Bruyn Ouboter (Head of Projects and Services). Responsible at Eyeloveyou: Stevie Fiedler (creation and conception), Oliver Kirschbaum (consulting and conception), Michael Schär (text), Martin Sautter (animation), Thomas Martin (programming), Thomas Rechberger (Alterna Recording Studios).

Newspapers report negatively on Ecopop

*Die Schweiz am Sonntag* presents a study by the University of Zurich that examines how daily and Sunday newspapers cover the current referendum proposals.

The media in German-speaking Switzerland have reported a clear rejection of the Ecopop initiative, writes Schweiz am Sonntag. This is shown by an interim evaluation of the voting monitor of the Research Institute for the Public Sphere and Society (Fög) at the University of Zurich. The evaluation includes editorial articles on the referendum proposals of November 30 from subscription newspapers (Aargauer Zeitung, Berner Zeitung, NZZ, Tages-Anzeiger), tabloid and free newspapers (20 Minuten, Blick, Blick am Abend) and Sunday newspapers (NZZ am Sonntag, Sonntagszeitung, Schweiz am Sonntag).

With 57% of contributions, Ecopop received far more attention than the other initiatives combined. The abolition of lump-sum taxation accounted for 24% of contributions, while the Gold Initiative received 19%.at the Fög. A negative tone towards the initiative can be found in 54% of the contributions. A positive tone was discernible in 9 percent of the contributions, while 37 percent were controversial.

The rejection of the Ecopop initiative was evident in all ten press titles examined. It is expressed not only in the fact that the media themselves speak out against the proposal, but also in the fact that the majority of those who were given a platform in the media rejected the proposal. The spectrum of negative voices is broad. Around 25 percent of the statements were in favor, 55 percent were against and 20 percent were ambivalent. (sis/SaS)

New SRF correspondent in Washington

In the summer of 2015, Peter Düggeli will take over as Swiss Radio and Television’s TV correspondent in Washington. He will replace Arthur Honegger, who has been reporting from the United States since 2008—first from New York, and since 2012 from Washington.

Peter Düggeli, 44, studied history and English at the University of Fribourg in Üechtland and graduated with a degree in 1999. He also successfully completed a postgraduate degree in journalism at the Swiss School of Journalism Maz in Lucerne. Peter Düggeli has been working for Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) since 2010. He initially worked as a business editor at "Tagesschau" before moving to the news magazine "10vor10" as an editor in 2012. Before joining SRF, Peter Düggeli reported for three years for the business newspaper "Cash", among others.

From summer 2015, Peter Düggeli will be the new TV correspondent in Washington. He succeeds Arthur Honegger, who has been reporting from the USA for SRF for seven years. He took up the correspondent position in New York in 2008 and moved to the capital at the beginning of 2012. Arthur Honegger will return to SRF in Zurich.

Hackers crack thousands of webcams

Hackers have compromised private and business webcams in several countries—including Switzerland—and posted the live footage on a Russian website. Among them are about 140 webcams from Switzerland.

The portal listed 141 webcams in Switzerland on Thursday. The Federal Reporting and Analysis Center for Information Assurance (Melani) confirmed at the request of SDA that Swiss network cameras are also affected. There are said to be 4591 cases in the USA, 2059 in France, 1576 in the Netherlands and 500 in the UK.

The tapped devices ranged from baby monitors with a video function to professional office surveillance cameras, according to the British data protection authority ICO. Even the goings-on in a gym in Manchester were broadcast online.

The website, which is operated in Russia, uses the weak security measures of thousands of cameras; the default settings for many systems are accessible online, said Simon Rice from the ICO. This is a threat that affects everyone and against which we must protect ourselves. We should at least cover the camera lens when not in use, advised Rice.

Hardly anything exciting

In Switzerland, the cameras listed on the Russian site show little that is spectacular: empty living rooms, deserted gardens, garages and landscape shots, as well as individual stores and restaurants. According to Melani, these are images from unprotected cameras or cameras secured with preset passwords. (SDA)

Speechless visualization of Mondaine Helvetica

Combining 2D and 3D animation with live-action footage, frame eleven celebrates the new Mondaine Helvetica watch collection. Without any voiceover or explanatory text, the video illustrates how the iconic typeface found its way onto the wrist.

Swiss watches are many. But only a few brands refer to Swiss design legends from the ground up. Mondaine now has even two such watches. In addition to the Bahnhofsuhr, the company is now launching the Mondaine Helvetica. A tribute to the typography classic, which has thus found its way to the wrist.

Using real images as well as targeted 2D and 3D animation, frame eleven stages this process in a film that is also made of the purest Swiss design and presents the new Mondaine Helvetica in a fitting manner.

The Estavayer 2016 festival logo

The logo for the 2016 Schwing and Älplerfest has been unveiled. It was designed by Sev’design.

In order to appeal to the 250,000 spectators expected in the Fribourg arena, the organizing committee is drawing on the expertise of a local creative partner: Sev'design from Châtel-St-Denis is responsible for developing the visual identity and the graphic concept.

Focus on the canton of Fribourg

As the host of the next "Eidgenössisches", the canton of Fribourg has a special place in the logo: The black and white signet contains the Fribourg coat of arms and embodies the down-to-earth and traditional values of the canton through well-known Poya figures (the bull alludes to the Muni "Mazot de Cremo", which the wrestling king will lead home in August 2016). The round shape of the logo refers to the seven sawdust rings that will be set up in the arena. And oak leaves will also adorn the heads of the future winners.
