The search for a model for cooperation among the regional television stations in Eastern Switzerland has yielded no results. According to their own statements, Tele Ostschweiz and TV Schaffhausen see no possibility of cooperating with TeleTop. The reason: its terms would have amounted to a takeover, they said. CEO Günther Heuberger intends to keep his doors open to competitors from Schaffhausen and St. Gallen. Typografische Monatsblätter. The Museum für Gestaltung Zürich has published a book featuring its graphic design collection. It deals «with the art of effectively using type in the form of texts and composing it with images.» Essays explore the art of book covers collected by art historian Konrad Farner in the 1920s and 1930s, the work of the Basel-based GGK in the 1960s, and the context behind the typographic freedoms embraced by Swiss graphic designers in the 1990s. The book will be presented at the museum on February 5.
More advertising freedom for private TV. Private TV stations are to be allowed to air commercial breaks, and private television and radio stations are to be permitted to advertise wine and beer. The Council of States Committee on Transport and Telecommunications (KVF) is working on a corresponding bill. The KVF is thus implementing a parliamentary initiative by Swiss Advertising President Carlo Schmid, which the plenary session approved last September.
BBDO, O&M, and Deutsch are Agencies of the Year. The BBDO advertising network has reason to celebrate: Both major American trade magazines, Adweek and Advertising Age, have named it the global Agency of the Year. This marks the first time Advertising Age has honored the same agency in two consecutive years. With $1.3 billion in new business worldwide, BBDO is likely the only network to have achieved double-digit growth (11 percent) in 2001, according to the citation. Advertising Age named Ogilvy & Mather the U.S. Agency of the Year. Adweek’s U.S. Agency of the Year was Deutsch.
For upcoming big shopping trips. At the end of March, a «new neighborhood» called Albuville will open in Rapperswil. Tower Sports will also be located in the Albuville Rondelle, the «Albuville Tower.» Spanning 1,312 square meters, the space will feature a Nike department, an Adidas department, bikes, outdoor gear, skis and snowboards, as well as fashion and trends. For this new sports paradise, Publicis in Zurich developed a new corporate identity that naturally plays on the name and actual look of Tower Sports. Based on this, Publicis created a direct mail campaign, a trade show booth for Expo Jona 02, and an eye-catching giveaway: shopping bags twice as tall as normal ones. The solution to the riddle is provided by Daniel Krieg’s headline on the back: «The perfect bag for your next big shopping trip.» AD: Flo Wacker; Graphics: Corinne Stadelmann; Consulting: Caroline Peter.
An alternative to hotels. A pilot tourism project is slowly but surely taking root in Munich: Statthotel, an alternative to hotels and guesthouses that connects travelers with private rooms. Statthotel, based in Switzerland, is being promoted by Department. Since its founding a year ago, the young full-service network agency in Zurich has already delivered several impressive projects. Its clients include the identity and test launch of the Swiss vehicle Sam, the full international launch of the Head Snowboards brand, and an online platform for the German telecommunications provider T-Mobile. The fact that Department’s portfolio includes many international clients can be explained by its founders. Johne Eisenhut (Copy) grew up in the U.S. and, before founding the agency, worked in marketing in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Ollie Brunschwiler (Art) has a background in art direction and freelance work, during which he consistently looked beyond national borders. The two finally met in the early 1990s as professional snowboarders.
15 Years of Sonntag. To mark its fifteenth anniversary, the SonntagsZeitung has launched a series of advertisements featuring people who, over the past 15 years, «have made a difference and, like so many others, contributed to a vibrant Switzerland.» The campaign was produced in-house and «our own
»A birthday present,« reveals publishing director Sandra Geiger. Othmar Rothenfluh served as art director; text by Peter Steiner; photo by Daniel Boschung; advertising director: Christine Lesnik. The series was launched with Franz Steinegger and Beatrice Tschanz. The communications expert—»and a SonntagsZeitung reader all these years”—is waiving her fee, as are all those featured, and donating it to a charitable cause. The ad will run in the company’s own publications, as well as in Bilanz and Weltwoche.
Novartis Consolidates Media Business with MindShare. According to U.S. trade publications, Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis is consolidating its media budgets with the WPP agency MindShare. According to these reports, MindShare prevailed over competitors OMD and Starcom MediaVest and will manage the global budget of $250 million going forward. Novartis spokesperson Satoshi Sugimoto declined to confirm the reports to WerbeWoche: «We do not comment on third-party companies from which we procure services.» Cosima Giannachi, managing director of MindShare Switzerland, also remained tight-lipped. She noted that the matter has not yet been decided, especially since MindShare also handles business for Novartis’s competitor Pfizer in Europe.
Editorial
A rather rare instance of consensus: The readers of *WerbeWoche* have voted Dominique von Matt “Advertiser of the Year” for 2001. Von Matt, who holds a doctorate in business administration and serves as agency director at Jung von Matt/Limmat, won the award with just over 25 percent of the vote, followed by
Frank Bodin and Martin Spillmann, who both received the same number of votes.
Dominique von Matt began his career in advertising on the client side as a marketing assistant and product manager; in 1993, he founded the agency Honegger von Matt together with David Honegger. After his business partner left the firm, his agency merged with that of his older brother in April 2001.
Jean Rémy von Matt joined Jung von Matt/Limmat in Germany. Today, he works
There are 55 people at the agency, which recently moved from Seefeld to Wolfbachstrasse near the Zurich Schauspielhaus. The editorial team at WerbeWoche extends its warmest congratulations to Dominique von Matt on his selection. You can read more about the award winner on pages 12 and 14.
This is the third time the «Campaign of the Year» award has been presented. The selection included 21 campaigns that we featured on our front page last year. In addition to the readers of *WerbeWoche*, readers of *Schweizer Illustrierte* and the TV guide *Tele* also participated in the voting for the first time this year. With about 18 percent of the votes cast, the ZVV campaign («ZVV – Richtig verkehrt») by Publicis, Zurich, was voted Campaign of the Year.
What is revealing about this result is that readers of both the trade press and the general-interest press arrived at the same assessment. The ZVV campaign was also awarded an Effie last fall for its effectiveness and has a good chance of winning an ADC Cube at the end of January. In other words, this is a rather rare case in which a campaign satisfies all three parties involved: the agency, the advertiser, and the consumers. We extend our heartfelt congratulations.
