Call for Entries - Fantoche opens competition 2015
From September 1 to 6, the city of Baden will host Fantoche for the 13th time. largest animated film show in Switzerland. With the "International Competition" and the "Swiss Competition", Fantoche searches for the latest trends in animated imagery in all its variations.
Over 1,200 short films were submitted in 2014 - Fantoche is hoping for a similarly high number in 2015: the competition is now open and national and international film creatives are invited to submit their animated films by May 25, 2015. Fantoche also announces that Poland will be the guest country at Fantoche 2015.
The "International Competition" is at the heart of the festival program. This is where trends and current tendencies in animated short filmmaking are tracked down: festival director Annette Schindler and her loyal team look for artistically daring ideas, unconventional approaches, new talents and first-class auteur films and the world's most prominent innovations. The twelve different awards are defined accordingly. With the "Best Film", "High Risk" or "New Talent" awards, the festival can take into account the different qualities that characterize animated filmmaking.
Films by Swiss directors automatically take part in the selection for the "Swiss Competition". This celebrated its premiere at Fantoche in 2009 and is now just as popular and accepted by audiences as the "International Competition". An international jury awards three prizes. The Swiss scene is thus brought into focus and at the same time presented in an international context.
The latest films for children of different age groups are selected from the submissions in collaboration with the Zauberlaterne children's film club. These films are also reviewed by a jury made up of children, and the children's jury and the children's audience each award a prize.
The online registration portal for the international and Swiss competitions is now available at Fantoche.ch opened. The registration deadline is May 25, 2015.
Program focus on Poland
After outstanding films from Poland were repeatedly represented in the "International Competition" in previous Fantoche years, an in-depth look at the Polish animated film scene was called for. Some filmmakers were able to make a name for themselves even before the political change and have made a significant contribution to creating a new dynamic in the recent past. A number of key factors can be identified for the success of Polish animated films. These certainly include the training for animated filmmakers in Lodz, but also the successful studios with which the filmmakers can produce their films after graduating from the renowned school. These will be presented as part of the program focus on Poland. With the curators Piotr Szczepanowicz and Anja Sosic, Fantoche director Annette Schindler was able to win over two outstanding experts on Polish animation art for the festival. Sosic was on the Fantoche jury for the "Swiss Competition" in 2014 and is therefore very familiar with the conditions and requirements of the Baden festival. As an animation director, Szczepanowicz was involved in "Peter and the Wolf", which won the Oscar in 2007. The short film "Ziegenort" (Tomasz Popakul), which he produced, won prizes at various international festivals, including Fantoche.
The two curators will present four programs of historical and contemporary short films and one program of animated TV series at Fantoche 2015. There will also be a studio and a school presentation as well as a "Coming Soon" screening. And, of course, Polish DJs will be spinning their latest records at the Royal.
