Swiss television must show weather images free of charge

The Federal Office of Communications (Bakom) has imposed strict requirements: No more commercials are to be shown on Swiss Television's weather channel. This could cost Swiss Television 750,000 francs in revenue.

The conditions imposed by the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom) are tough: no more advertising is to be shown on Swiss television's weather channel. At present, live pictures and advertisements from tourist stations are still shown every morning, bringing in around a quarter of a million francs a year for Swiss television. According to a report in the Sonntagszeitung, Bakom, which is conducting proceedings against SF for surreptitious advertising, is now demanding a radical change. The advertising messages must disappear completely and the political news must be removed. Tourism organizations that finance the programme should be named as sponsors. The channel must also be opened up to image providers who do not pay and the selection of images must be based on journalistic criteria.
The Sonntagszeitung concludes that this could mean the end of the weather picture business for Swiss television. This is because, as the sponsors' images can no longer be broadcast automatically and exclusively, the incentive for tourism stations to place such advertising is likely to drop significantly.

Cannes: Bronze Film Lion goes to Wirz

Wirz Zürich won a bronze lion at the 53rd International Advertising Festival with the "Photographer" spot for Schweizerische Mobiliar.

Wirz Zürich won a bronze Lion at the 53rd International Advertising Festival with the "Photographer" spot for Schweizerische Mobiliar. Wirz was the only company to turn its shortlist position into a Lion. Director Ernst Wirz of Wirz + Fraefel effectively staged the commercial. Werbewoche congratulates on the precious metal! The commercial plays with an original dramaturgy: the gag happens in the mind. A photographer is asked to take pictures of a valuable porcelain collection for an auction. The 400 pieces are meticulously laid out on the floor. Naturally, everyone expects a ladder or one of the spotlights to fall over and crash into the porcelain. But the 08/15 expectation is deceived. Instead, there is a short circuit in the flash unit. The picture remains black for a full 12 seconds. And the photographer stands in the middle of the 400 pieces ... The unfortunate man surprised at the stupidest place has no choice but to look for a way through the porcelain to the nearest light switch in the dark. The effect of shattering porcelain in 12 seconds of darkness has achieved a rewarding effect.
In view of the overwhelming dominance of the American and British competition (the USA was represented with 146 shortlist places, the UK with 64), the result for Switzerland in the Film category is more than just satisfactory with 3 shortlist places and a Bronze Lion. The Grand Prix in Film went to Abbot Mead Vickers BBDO, London for the Guinness spot. The French agency TBWA Paris was named Advertising Agency of the Year.

Around 1.6 million viewers watched the Korea-Switzerland match on SF zwei. This represents a record audience for the year, according to Swiss Television (SF). The market share was 79.2 percent, also a record at this World Cup. The ratings for the Swiss national team's previous matches were 74.6 percent (Togo - Switzerland) and 72.4 percent (France - Switzerland). As always, the figures do not include viewers who did not watch the event on screen at home, but in public places and on large screens. SF also reports that the added-value offerings for the World Cup on the Internet have also met with great interest. The sports site Sport.sf.tv has recorded 40,000 visits a day since the start of the World Cup, with over twice as many on the day of the Korea-Switzerland match. The online game has also been successful, attracting 130,000 visitors to date. The football blog records up to 4,200 visits a day.

Cannes: No Titanium for Switzerland

Three entries from Switzerland wanted to compete with the 200 other entries in the Titanium category. But they were out of luck.

Three entries from Switzerland wanted to compete with the 200 other entries in the Titanium category. Among them was the mammoth "Mary Woodbridge" campaign by Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett. However, this campaign, which had already won the Goldbach Media Crossmedia Award, had no luck in Cannes.
This left Switzerland unplaced in the categories Titanium, Promotion, Radio, Cyber and in the supreme disciplines Press and Outdoor, and consequently without a Lion in precious metal.

Sales slump at Cailler - because of or despite marketing offensive?

While the overall market for sweet treats saw only a slight decline, Cailler’s sales have suffered significantly since the introduction of the new packaging. This has raised suspicions that the new packaging is not proving to be a hit.

While the overall market for sweet sins only recorded a slight decline, sales at Cailler have suffered significantly since the introduction of the new packaging. In April, for example, sales slumped by over 25 percent compared to the previous year. In May, sales were even 32 percent lower than in the same month last year. This is confirmed by figures from the market research institute AC Nielsen.
As the Sonntagszeitung reports, Nelly Wenger, head of Nestlé Switzerland, has not only spent a lot on the new packaging, but also on marketing. The advertising offensive alone would have cost an estimated 10 million francs by May. However, Nestlé disputes the slump in sales: The company has other figures, media spokesman Philippe Oertlé told the Sonntagszeitung, but without substantiating these figures. The loss of Denner as a sales channel is also to blame.

But there is no sign of enthusiasm among the other retailers either. Coop lowered its prices at the beginning of May and the beginning of June so that the new Schoggi does not cost much more than the old one. Volg also failed to achieve a resounding success and Manor is hoping for Christmas business.

However, one suspicion remains: The new PET packaging for the chocolate caused annoyance not only at Denner, but also among many customers. According to a French consumer organization, it produces twice as much waste as the old packaging. After Kassensturz took up the issue, quite a few people called for a consumer boycott of Cailler chocolate in PET packaging. Following the launch of the new packaging at the end of February, Nestlé first reported an increase in sales figures. In the meantime, curiosity seems to have died down and the willingness to buy has fallen back to a lower level.

From next Monday (19.6.06), the daily shortlist coverage from Cannes will be available here.captioncaptioncaptioncaptioncaptioncaptioncaptioncaptioncaptioncaptioncaptioncaptioncaptionCongratulations!!!The new concept of the Swiss event has proved its worth. It is no longer a Swiss event, but was held yesterday for the first time together with the German cinema marketer Werbeweischer and the Austrian ORF-Enterprises, who have all been baking their own bread in Cannes up to now. The contemplative coexistence has become a strong and cheerful togetherness. And the exclusively positive, almost euphoric feedback from visitors guarantees that the event will definitely be held again next year. And secondly, that those responsible will work extremely hard to eliminate the event's last teething troubles. These included the fact that the portions of food served were a little small and there was no hot main course. As a result, after midnight a rather large group of Swiss people could be seen sitting stolidly in front of the McDonalds in Cannes, filling their stomachs. It's just that a cheeseburger gives us a feeling of home since you can get it on the Corviglia in St. Moritz, but on the other hand, and this is a top criterion for a party in Cannes, the hard drinks only ran out 10 minutes before closing time. That means something, because down here people don't drink towards the end of the week, they drink to excess. Which doesn't mean that the story gets out of hand. Because the fatigue that also sets in keeps any alcohol-fueled rowdiness in check. You just slump down here very comfortably. And this year in particular.
Unfortunately, the Events/Parties category is not yet listed in the competition below. But the organizers of the joint evening of all German-speaking countries definitely deserved the Golden Party Lion yesterday.text & photos: Beat Fritsch
