New RTVA adopted

On Friday, the Federal Council adopted the new Radio and Television Ordinance (RTVV). The ordinance, which takes effect on April 1, specifies the regulations on advertising and sponsorship, license fee allocation, the technical distribution of radio and television programs, and reception fees, which will now increase from 450 to 462 francs.

The Federal Council adopted the new Radio and Television Ordinance (RTVO) on Friday. The ordinance, which comes into force on 1 April, specifies the regulations on advertising and sponsorship, fee splitting, the technical distribution of radio and television programmes and reception fees, which will now rise from CHF 450 to CHF 462. In percentage terms, radio and television fees will rise by 2.5% instead of the 6.5% requested by the SRG (see
). Television will become 4.1% more expensive, while radio fees will remain unchanged. 4 percent of the fees, or around CHF 50 million, will be diverted to private radio and television stations. The Department of Communications (Bakom) will announce how much the individual private broadcasters will receive in the fall when the coverage areas have been defined (see ). However, as reported by SDA on Friday, it has already been decided that a maximum of half of their operating costs will be covered by fee splitting, with regional television receiving 70 percent.

Provisions on advertising and sponsorship In general, private broadcasters will enjoy more commercial freedom in future. They will be allowed to advertise for longer, interrupt broadcasts more often with advertising and have more flexibility with new forms of advertising such as split screens.
In addition, local radio stations and regional TV stations may advertise wine, beer and cider, but not schnapps. For SRG, the advertising regulations remain unchanged with a few exceptions. It is also prohibited from broadcasting sales windows as well as independent advertising and sponsorship on the Internet, as Bakom writes in a press release on Friday. However, its options are being expanded in the television sector, for example by allowing virtual and split-screen advertising during sports broadcasts. Product placement will continue to be permitted.

DRS Audience Council enthusiastic about opera broadcast

The simultaneous live and backstage broadcast of Mozart's Magic Flute on SF1 and SF zwei appealed to the Audience Council. It is in favor of more cultural events in this form, as they could appeal to a wider audience.

The simultaneous live and backstage broadcast of Mozart's Magic Flute on SF1 and SF zwei appealed to the Audience Council. It is in favor of more cultural events in this form, as they could appeal to a wider audience.
According to a press release issued by the Public Council on Friday, the innovative two-channel broadcast from the Zurich Opera House offered fascinating insights into the workings behind the scenes of a major production. The popular Mozart opera was broadcast simultaneously on both SF channels on March 1. The Audience Council is also fundamentally positive about the shift in sports programming from Radio DRS 1 to DRS 3, which took place a month ago. The live reports on DRS 3 have been intensified without reducing the basic coverage on DRS 1.

RTVA: Reactions to the online advertising ban for SRG

In the new RTVA, the Federal Council has agreed to a ban on advertising and sponsorship for the SRG's online offering. While the Swiss Press Association welcomes the decision, the SRG said in a statement on Friday that it wished the Federal Council had not decided on such a far-reaching ban.

In the new RTVA, the Federal Council has agreed to a ban on advertising and sponsorship for the SRG's online offering. While the Swiss Press Association welcomes the decision, the SRG said in a statement on Friday that it wished the Federal Council had not decided on such a far-reaching ban.
SRG regrets the ban on advertising and sponsorship in the online sector. This means that it is being denied the fastest growing and most promising form of advertising, which is permitted to Swiss private and many foreign providers.
Online advertising and sponsorship would have expanded the financing options for the public service. Unsurprisingly, Swiss publishers see this advertising ban as a means of creating fair competition. The Swiss Press Association has always emphasized that this asymmetry is "right and necessary" in order to prevent a distortion of competition in favour of the SRG, which is financed by licence fees, as the association wrote in a communiqué on Friday.
Confirmation of traditional advertising optionsSRG is satisfied with the fact that interruption advertising is still permitted. It welcomes the fact that the additional restrictions envisaged in the draft ordinance did not go through. According to SRG, this would have led to a significant loss of revenue and prevented the use of meaningful commercial income. SRG is also allowed to continue with product placement, which is seen as positive because this would have severely restricted the possibility of co-productions with Swiss filmmakers. SRG vows that it will continue to uphold the principle that "the prop (product placement) follows the story and not vice versa".

Swiss Adex shows price drop at Google

The number of ad slots booked on Google has risen again, while click prices have fallen sharply after a long period of stagnation. This is shown by the February figures from Angelink Yourposition’s Swiss Adex.

The number of ad slots booked on Google has risen again, while click prices have fallen sharply after a long period of stagnation. This is shown by the February figures from Angelink Yourposition’s Swiss Adex.
Following the December peak and a January that was, as expected, sluggish, more ads were visible on Google again in February: About 36 text ads were displayed per search query, compared to 34 the previous month, indicating that the general upward trend is taking hold. Surprisingly, however, click prices plummeted from 1.50 to 1.34 francs within a month, reaching their lowest level since the introduction of the Swiss Adex. In its press release, Angelink Yourposition cites as the reason the fact that, since February, Google has been providing more transparent information about the lowest possible cost-per-click based on the so-called quality score—information that the market apparently acted on immediately, leading to a reduction in bid prices across all industries.

The Swiss Adex, published monthly by Angelink Yourposition, tracks trends in search engine marketing using Google AdWords in Switzerland. All price figures are based on the cost-per-click rates that Google offers to potential advertisers online.
