Breast cancer concerns us all

Education Early detection is life-saving in the treatment of breast cancer in many cases, but not all women are aware of this. Prominent women are once again taking part in the necessary awareness campaign this year.

Education In recent years, the incidence of breast cancer in Switzerland has risen massively from 3200 to over 5000 per year. However, the success of mammography screening and breast cancer treatment has meant that far fewer women die from breast cancer today than in the past. Nevertheless, the mortality rate is still over 25 percent. This need not be the case. Thanks to early detection using various methods, a further ten percent of women affected could be saved. Accordingly, this year's new appearance is bright, friendly and hopeful. It is supported by prominent women such as Beatrice Tschanz, Jennifer Ann Gerber, Tanja Gutmann and Anna Maier.

The Fairness Commission is taking up the issue and organizing a workshop on sexism in advertising on 9 October in Zurich City Hall. In addition to National Councillor Pascale Bruderer, who has chaired the Fairness Commission since this year, City Councillor Kathrin Martelli will also be present. Lawyer Marc Schwenniger presents the practice of the Swiss Commission on Fair Trading. After a presentation by a representative of the Swedish Ethics Council, there will be a panel discussion in which Pascale Bruderer will be joined by Dore Heim, Equal Opportunities Officer of the City of Zurich, and the two advertisers Pius Walker and Thomas Städeli. The event will take place on October 9 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the music hall of Zurich City Hall. Participation in the event is free of charge. Registrations should be sent to [email protected].

Everything in butter

Food Spillmann Felser Leo Burnett makes the other lubricants look pretty old with a new butter campaign.

Food Spillmann Felser Leo Burnett makes the other lubricants look pretty old with a new butter campaign.
Butter is a purely natural product made exclusively from milk. This is in stark contrast to so-called vegetable spreadable fats. The new campaign by Spillmann Felser Leo Burnett shows just how natural butter is in contrast to competing plant-based products. The print subjects each depict two people who remind us that you are what you eat. For example, Renzo Blumenthal, bursting with strength and health, stands in front of us and confesses on a small sign: "I eat butter." Next to him is a bodybuilder marinated in tanning cream. His sign reads: "Not me." The headline resolves with: "Any questions?"
The claim summarizes what is obvious: "Butter. Everything else is not natural." Finally, reference is made to the website www.butter.ch. Here you can not only download the beautiful Renzo as a screensaver or order e-cards. There are also many recipes with butter and the information that the production of butter also makes ecological sense, because unlike most vegetable oils and fats, butter does not require long transportation routes or complicated, energy-intensive production processes. On the posters and advertisements that replace the subjects with the butter woman Sarina Arnold, Fiona Hefti, among others, comes out as a butter lover.
The subjects were photographed by photo star Lozza and can now be seen throughout Switzerland.

"The advertising industry is deeply philanthropic"

In an interview, Julie Thompson, the director of Advertising Week, explains why advertising can also bring about positive change.

In an interview, Julie Thompson, the director of Advertising Week, explains why advertising can also bring about positive change.
WW: Why is one of the focal points of this year’s Advertising Week campaigns a social or environmental cause? Julie Thompson: Advertising Week is held so that the advertising industry can celebrate itself, but also to bring new talent on board. In the U.S., advertising isn’t considered as “sexy” as it is in the U.K., for example. We want to remind people that the advertising industry definitely does good things, too.
How credible can such an initiative be? The advertising industry is deeply philanthropic—there are so many agencies committed to social causes—but unfortunately, that’s not a particularly appealing topic for the media. We heard it today from a host who writes about the industry for the Wall Street Journal: The guiding principle is «follow the money»—good news doesn’t matter in that context. Marketers aren’t money-grubbing hucksters trying to push their wares; we care about our environment.
