The cell phone company Motorola apparently wants to shift its advertising and media budgets. The company has come under pressure from competition from Nokia and the iPhone. CEO Casey Keller told the American trade journal Advertising Age that he is currently in the process of reorganizing his cooperation with agencies. Definitive decisions could possibly be made as early as this week. The agency group Ogilvy & Mather, which currently provides Motorola's agencies in Latin America and Asia, appears to be ahead in the race for Europe and North America. The BBDO Group currently holds the mandate in Europe, while BBDO partner agency Wirz is responsible in Switzerland. Her predecessor could now become her successor: Ogilvy & Mather was already responsible for Motorola in Europe until mid-2006. The lead agency is to be supported by two to three other creative firms on a project-by-project basis.
The media account is also being evaluated, AdAge continues. However, everything could remain the same here: Mindshare, which currently already manages the budget, is apparently ahead. According to AdAge estimates, the global budget is between 200 and 300 million US dollars.
In Switzerland, the latest developments do not yet appear to have any concrete impact. Gaby Zimmerli, Managing Director of Grendene, Ogilvy & Mather, told Werbewoche: "I have heard about these talks, but I have no confirmed information".
Nothing is known yet at Wirz either: "I haven't heard anything yet," said Geri Aebi, Managing Director of Wirz Werbung and member of the Wirz Group Management. If his agency were to lose the mandate, the loss would apparently be bearable: "Motorola was not a major client in the current year: we were only active in a few small adaptations".
