A study on the sustainable development of Euro 08 has shown that the Germans and French hardly have a different image of Switzerland after the European Football Championships were held in Switzerland. No long-term sustainability of the football event could be proven. The study was carried out by the Federal Office of Sport (Baspo) and is based on surveys in Switzerland and abroad as well as economic studies. The initial evaluation results were presented in Bern on Monday.
The image effect was generally overestimated, said Hansruedi Müller from the Bernese Research Institute for Leisure and Tourism (FIF) at the media conference. The survey of the Swiss population reveals a particularly skeptical assessment of the economic success of the euro. The researchers contrast this impression with the gross value added, which is around 870 million Swiss francs and therefore at the upper end of the pre-event estimates.
The researchers also found a reason for the drop in the number of overnight stays in the host cities during the Euro compared to the same period last year: many foreign visitors either stayed with friends or relatives or spent the night in their cars or in wild camping sites.
In terms of infrastructure, the Euro triggered investments of between 38 and 56 million euros in Switzerland, depending on the method of calculation, as Christian Moesch, the author of the corresponding study, explained. Despite a lot of waste, the Euro was environmentally responsible thanks to sensible measures, said project manager Müller. However, it was a shame that no long-term sustainability process, such as certification, had been initiated.
The findings of the study on the Euro are to be incorporated into the strategy for major sporting events, said Baspo Director Matthias Remund. The question is whether Switzerland is capable of organizing the Winter Olympics, for example. Representatives of the Swiss sports associations will discuss the results for the first time on Thursday in Magglingen, SDA reported on Monday.
