EWZ Selection Award 2009 goes to Ester Vonplon

Ester Vonplon, a photographer from Graubünden, has won this year’s Swiss Photography Prize from EWZ Selection for her photo series on Kosovo. The prize is worth 15,000 francs. Jonathan Heyer from Zurich took first place in the advertising photography category.

"When the weather is no longer broken, we will go for a walk" is the title of Ester Vonplon's work. It shows scenes from a village in Kosovo. The Grisons photographer, who was born in 1980, also makes the fragility of this world visible by deliberately leaving the technical flaws in her black and white images as they are. The jury praised the winning work for its "immediacy, radical composition and graceful craftsmanship". Only photography can generate such a lyrical atmosphere with these means, jury member Walter Keller is quoted in the press release. (Work Vonplon)
Jonathan Heyer wins the photo prize in the "Advertising" category with "Hare, frog and weasel completely relaxed". It is endowed with 5000 francs. The witty three-part commissioned work for the Migros label Terra Suisse aims to promote nature and animal-friendly agriculture. (Work Heyer)
Vanessa Püntener was awarded the Fine Arts category prize on Friday evening. She receives the award for the atmospherically dense series "Alp - Portrait of a Hidden World". (Work Püntener) Andri Pol wins the prize in the "Editorial Photography" category with his harrowingly natural portraits entitled "Albino Hunting in Tanzania". (Work Pole)
Finally, Roger Eberhard was awarded the "Free" category prize. Under the title "So long, Cockaigne", he portrays people in one of the poorest regions of Russia. The irony of the story: the region is only 250 kilometers away from the land of Cockaigne, Moscow, the Russian center of money. (Work Eberhard)
The award-winning photo series can be seen until May 17 in the Swiss Photo Award exhibition at the EWZ Selnau substation in Zurich. The exhibition includes all 18 works that the jury nominated for the 2009 Photo Award from over 450 entries with around 3,000 images. The prizes will be presented on Friday evening.

Federal Supreme Court: Guidelines on the protectability of a melody as a trademark

The Federal Supreme Court has established the principles for the protectability of a melody as a trademark. A catchy and recognizable sequence of notes is necessary. However, lyrics are not required. Even the sound logo does not have to be able to be sung exactly.

The Federal Supreme Court has established the principles for the protectability of a melody as a trademark. A catchy and recognizable sequence of notes is necessary. However, lyrics are not required. Even the sound logo does not have to be able to be sung exactly.
According to the judges, a short, self-contained musical theme could well be understood by the addressee as a reference to a product on first hearing. Typically, such sound cues are used at the beginning and end of an advertising spot. In order for the melody to be understood as an indication of a specific origin of the product, it is not necessary that it can be clearly reproduced by the listener. Rather, recognition is sufficient.

The "p:forum" industry event organized by Publicitas will not be held this year. The all-media marketer has streamlined its sponsorship and event program for the current year for cost reasons. According to a Publicitas press release, various events and engagements will be suspended for six months. This affects internal and public events as well as sponsoring commitments at third-party events.
According to Christian Gartmann, Director of Marketing & Communication at Publicitas, the current situation in the advertising market is forcing the company to take measures on the cost side. However, the newly launched "p:forum" worked well last year, so the intention is to hold it again in spring 2010.
The "p:forum" in Zurich and Geneva was created in 2008 as a merger of the former Publimedia Forum and the Publicitas Publishers' Conference. A total of 450 experts from publishing houses, advertising clients, media and advertising agencies as well as business and trade journalists attended the two events last September.
