The seven nominees for the Observer's Prix Courage have been determined. They come from different regions of Switzerland, two of them from French-speaking Switzerland. A jury headed by the writer Franz Hohler will now choose the winner. The Beobachter readers will decide who receives the audience award in the coming weeks. The prizes will be awarded by the Beobachter on Friday, September 11, at the Zunfthaus zum Rüden in Zurich.
The Beobachter has taken the nomination of this year's possible Prix Courage award winners as an opportunity to dedicate a separate cover page to each of the seven everyday heroes, as they are presented in the current issue. Now the current issue appears with seven different covers. For this purpose, 45,000 copies of the total print run of over 300,000 were printed with each portrait.
The following candidates have been nominated for the Prix Courage, worth 25,000 Swiss francs, and the Audience Award, worth 10,000 Swiss francs:
- Nathalie Mack, 8400 Winterthur. Without hesitation, the 23-year-old rushed to the aid of a young woman who had been attacked by a man. The trainee nurse courageously beat the perpetrator into flight and contributed to the fact that he could be caught shortly afterwards.
- Damiano Saitta, 4533 Riedholz SO. The athletic 14-year-old jumped into the raging river Aare on a beautiful June day and saved a girl from drowning. The mother of the 10-year-old had previously tried in vain to pull her child out of the water.
- Marisa Pralong (43), 1201 Geneva. The former Manor saleswoman campaigned against a further extension of store opening hours during the Christmas season and reported to the press about working conditions at the department store. She was therefore dismissed.
- Zoran Vasic (36), 8600 Dübendorf. The father of two and automation specialist rescued an accident victim from a burning car on the A1 shortly before Winterthur. In doing so, he put himself in acute danger and suffered cuts to his hands.
- Bettina Ecklin, 8708 Männedorf. The lawyer and ex-employee at the Office for Economy and Labor of the Canton of Zurich (AWA) investigated the suspicion that former Schauspielhaus director Matthias Hartmann was employing his nanny illegally. She filed a report for moonlighting. When the highest authorities intervened in favor of Hartmann, she filed criminal charges against the management of the AWA and quit her job.
- Marie-Rose Genoud, 1950 Sion. The 70-year-old nun, who lives in the monastery of Sion, fought for more than ten years against the officialdom of the Valais, which unjustly took money from asylum seekers. She went all the way to the Federal Supreme Court and in 2008 she got justice.
- Calista Gabriela Fischer, 8057 Zurich. The 46-year-old Lehmann victim founded a self-help group, even though she feared being sued by Credit Suisse. Together with other victims, she fought for compensation from the big bank.

The Observer's Prix Courage has been awarded since 1997. It honors particularly characterful and courageous women and men who courageously intervene in cases of misconduct and assaults, who accept their own risks or disadvantages in order to rush to people's aid, or who selflessly stand up for an open, solidary and just Switzerland - the "heroines" and "heroes" of everyday life. The Prix Courage consists of a jury prize and an audience prize.
