Netflix regulates data volume when watching movies on mobile networks

A new feature is designed to protect users of the video streaming service Netflix from horrendous cell phone bills when watching movies on their smartphones.

In the future default setting on the Netflix app, users on mobile networks will be able to stream videos for three hours for one gigabyte of data volume, the company announced Thursday. Those who have unlimited data volume or want to change the picture quality can adjust the settings. Those who watch movies and series on the WLAN network do not have to worry about the data volume. The situation is different when watching movies on the go: Most smartphone owners have a certain data volume. If this is exhausted, users may incur additional costs. "Our goal is to give you more control and greater choice over how you use your data volume," Netflix manager Eddy Wu wrote in a blog post. He said the streaming service has tried to strike a balance between good picture quality and data volume usage. Netflix now has a presence in 190 countries worldwide - including quite a few countries where smartphones are the main way to access the Internet. The streaming service says it has 81.5 million customers. (SDA)

News Corp with further decline in sales

Revenue at media conglomerate News Corp continues to decline. Revenue fell by a surprisingly sharp 7.3 percent to $1.89 billion at the start of the year, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of decline, the publisher of The Wall Street Journal announced on Thursday.

The reasons for this were a weaker advertising business and the strong dollar, which had a negative impact on international business. In the core business with news and information, which also includes the New York Post and the British newspapers Times and Sun, sales fell by nine percent. In the publishing division, it fell by eleven percent.

A special charge due to the settlement of a legal dispute also pushed media mogul Rupert Murdoch's company into the red. The bottom line was a loss of 149 million dollars after a profit of 23 million dollars a year ago. (SDA)

Tamedia poll on the public service initiative

The Swiss media group Tamedia is once again conducting a cross-publication poll on its news portals, including the «Pro Service public» popular initiative.

On Sunday, June 5, Swiss voters will decide on five controversial proposals: the three popular initiatives "Pro Service public", "For an unconditional basic income" and "For fair transport funding" ("Milchkuh Initiative"), the amendment to the Asylum Act and the amendment to the Federal Act on Medically Assisted Reproduction. Tamedia is conducting a comprehensive poll in three waves on all its news portals throughout Switzerland in order to get a feel for what citizens in this country think of these proposals in advance. The results will be evaluated immediately so that Tamedia's daily newspapers and news platforms throughout Switzerland can report on them quickly and in a well-founded manner, Tamedia said in a press release on Friday.

According to the second wave of the Tamedia referendum survey, which took place from 2 to 4 May 2016, the "Service Public Initiative" still has a clear majority: 59% of Swiss voters would definitely or somewhat approve of it. 30% want to reject the referendum, while 11% have not yet made up their minds.

The Tamedia voting survey is conducted in collaboration with political scientists Lucas Leemann and Fabio Wasserfallen. They weight the survey data according to demographic, geographical and political variables so that the sample corresponds as closely as possible to the structure of the voting population. The third survey wave will take place on May 19, 2016.

Press Council reprimands marketing supplement

The Swiss Press Council has reprimanded Mediaplanet for its business practices regarding an advertising insert in a newspaper in French-speaking Switzerland.

The Council sees the link between editorial content and attached advertising as violating the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists". In question is the practice of the company Mediaplanet. In 2015, the latter had contacted the Swiss Social Democratic Party (SP) and proposed to the SP to write an article of its choice for the supplement "Tabu" published by Mediaplanet. "Tabu" was to be inserted in the daily newspaper "Le Matin." According to the accompanying letter from Mediaplanet, the offer also included the suggestion that the SP should book paid advertising that would allow readers to identify the SP clearly and also visually. The SP complained about this practice to the Swiss Press Council.

The Press Council sees the offer as a violation of the Journalists' Code of Conduct, which stipulates that editorial content and advertising must be clearly separated. And it prohibits such forms of quid pro quo.

Mediaplanet produces "content marketing" according to its own statements. This mixes articles, publicity reports and advertising, which is often related to the articles. The Press Council accepted the complaint because the content and form of the supplement can mislead the reader as to its true nature, since it is distributed via a daily newspaper with a large circulation.

"Le Matin", on the other hand, was not involved in customer acquisition or in the content of "Tabu". The newspaper itself therefore did not violate professional ethics rules. Nevertheless, the Press Council notes that despite the different layout, confusion between Mediaplanet's product and the editorial content of "Le Matin" is possible. It recommends that the newspaper require Mediaplanet to make an explicit reference on the front page of such inserts that play on the possibility of confusion. The average reader must be able to unmistakably recognize the difference, the Council concludes.

Take it a step further—but in an eco-friendly way Energie 360° commissioned Ludek Martschini to develop the concept and design the promotional materials for its campaign encouraging the switch to an eco-friendly heating system.

As part of this campaign, pictograms were created as well as the layout for a direct mailing, various advertisements and a poster. The aim was to present the three different ecological possibilities of heat generation in a concise and simple way.

Zuri.net: New Smart Home Page

With the latest update, an intelligent and user-oriented news stream tailored specifically for Zurich residents is now displayed continuously, explains Reto Frei, founder and developer of Zuri.net.

Since April 2016, the Zuri.net homepage has been responding to real-time conditions, such as the time of day, the weather, and the day of the week. This means that when the weather is perfect for swimming, users see different, constantly updated information than when it’s museum weather; during the week, they get shopping suggestions until 6 p.m., followed by bar and restaurant recommendations afterward; as the weekend approaches, more party and event ideas; on Sundays, the top story highlights where to find the best brunches; and on rainy days, suggestions for cultural activities to help you spend an inspiring day. A compact feed from Zurich media outlets and blogs also provides an up-to-date snapshot of public life and lifestyle trends.

Zuri.net This provides a high degree of relevance for users. It presents the vast amount of constantly updated information from its City Guide, directories, and editorial magazine in a smart, easy-to-navigate context. Content for the homepage is continuously streamed from various sources. If they offer direct services—such as online reservations, reviews, or ticket purchases—they are linked with just one click. With this update, zuri.net has moved even closer to the city and even closer to the people of Zurich.

Last but not least: And daily greets the reversal rate

Where have the reversible sets gone? We have discovered them - in Austria.

The Swisslife reversible set campaign has been running for an incredibly long time. This is probably because it is incredibly good. Recently, however, things have gone quiet around the idea, which is undoubtedly one of the best in Swiss advertising history and which earned Leo Burnett a Cannes Gold Lion. Hopefully we will see it again soon. The Austrian Advertising Academy provides a bridging interim solution. It has adopted the concept without further ado and is using it to promote creativity in the trade journal Horizont. You have to come up with that first.

You probably have to complete the academy first to get a taste for your own ideas. I really want to Become an advertiser is probably not my vocation after all - life is full of twists and turns. (hae)

Serviceplan calls for a fat treat for Delica

Friday is International No-Diet Day. So it’s the perfect day to enjoy an extra serving of calories. For Delica and Serviceplan Suisse, that was reason enough to run an unusual ad a few days in advance.

The ad published in the newspaper *20 Minuten* doesn’t do what advertising usually does—namely, promote products that are light and airy and, of course, don’t make you gain weight at all. Today is all about indulging: with Café Royal Double Creamy. Not a no-fat product, but a double-fat treat—not about losing weight, but about digging in. For once (and hopefully not just on International Anti-Diet Day), you can enjoy it without a guilty conscience.
