Factory newspaper at the exhibition of the Federal Design Awards 2012

The Rote Fabrik’s in-house magazine, *Modes of Practice*, will be featured at the exhibition «2012 Swiss Confederation Design Awards,» which opens on October 25 at the Museum Bellerive in Zurich.

The thematic series "Modes of Practice" has been published at irregular intervals in the Rote Fabrik's Fabrikzeitung since 2009. The series examines strategies and methods of artistic and cultural production over the last 30 years. The collection of the last six issues, published in January 2012, includes texts, interviews and essays by over 30 authors from the fields of literature, art, history, philosophy and media theory. Each issue analyzes a specific thematic field; from William S. Burroughs' cut-up technique, Jean-Luc Godard's editing technique, David Lynch's use of the subconscious, Laura Albert's art figure JT Le Roy, Gustav Metzger's autodestructive art to John Carpenter's endless expansion of the space in between.

The themed series "Modes of Practice" can be seen as part of the award-winning studio work by Zurich designers Gregor Huber and Ivan Sterzinger, who have also been in charge of the editorial management of the Fabrikzeitung together with journalist Paula Scheidt since January 2012. The Fabrikzeitung, published by the Rote Fabrik and supported by the City of Zurich, appears ten times a year and is dedicated to social, political and cultural topics.

This year, the Fabrikzeitung was on display from February 20 to May 14, 2012 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the exhibition "Millennium Magazines" and from February 10 to June 3, 2012 at the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich in the exhibition "100 Years of Swiss Graphics". The Fabrikzeitung has a print run of 3,500 copies and is available free of charge in selected locations in Zurich. It can also be subscribed to.

Havas Worldwide Zurich: New FOPH campaign for the 25th anniversary of AIDS prevention

With the message «You can’t hide it forever—talk about STDs,» the Love Life campaign is launching a new phase. People with STDs are encouraged to inform their sexual partners about their diagnosis.

The large-scale advertising campaign aims to promote the correct handling of sexually transmitted diseases and thus further curb their spread. The main message: "Talk to your partner about sexually transmitted diseases - no matter what". Havas Worldwide Zurich wrote this in a press release on Friday.

The campaign kicks off with a film that will be shown on TV and in cinemas. It shows a couple undressing each other during stormy foreplay. But the young man tries in all seriousness to hinder the disclosure of his abdominal problem by wearing several pairs of underpants on top of each other. While the opening phase focuses on the usual repression, the three spots in the subsequent flights are intended to demonstrate, no less humorously, how to do it better. Taking responsibility for yourself and your partner means informing them about a possible sexually transmitted disease. Whether by shadow play, Morse code or even thought transmission - there are no limits to the imagination. The main thing is that the problem can now be solved together.

The presentation is flanked by other advertising materials that vary the central idea in imaginative ways. For example, on posters and online banners: with flowery descriptions of the unpleasant circumstances of a sexually transmitted disease. The target group is also encouraged to create their own slogans and vote for them online.

The return of syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and the like prompted the Federal Office of Public Health to shift the focus of its "Love Life" communication last year: from pure HIV prevention to all sexually transmitted infections (STIs), according to long-standing agency partner Havas Worldwide Zurich, formerly Euro RSCG Zurich. In 2011, the agency launched a campaign calling on those affected to go to the doctor if they have STI symptoms. The current communication campaign goes one step further: if a doctor has diagnosed an STI, the patient's sexual partner(s) must be informed. This is the only way to take effective measures to prevent a ping-pong effect or the spread of the disease.

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) commissioned the campaign development together with the Swiss Aids Federation (AHS) and the Swiss Sexual Health Foundation (SGS). It is important to those responsible that partner information is provided voluntarily and in the best possible way for those affected. To this end, Havas Worldwide Zurich set up a tool on the established online platform Check-your-lovelife.ch. Here, infected people can get tips on how to master the often difficult conversation with their partner. Alternatively, letters, emails or text messages can be sent via the website, anonymously if desired. This service is particularly useful for people with changing sexual partners. The online tool is advertised by doctors and specialists, as well as via a link in the campaign's various advertising materials.

The integrated prevention campaign will start on October 15, 2012 and run throughout Switzerland. Two further waves are planned for 2013.

How an advertising poster became a design

The Campari bottle featuring the slogan «Every Drop Is an Original» was displayed on the Welti-Furrer parking garage in Zurich for two months. Designers Francesco Rossi, Sonja Trachsel, and Tanja Klein each created a collection of five accessories inspired by it—trendy, practical, yet elegant pieces.

The advertising poster for Italian spirits manufacturer Campari was 158.5 square meters in size. The three Swiss fashion designers used it to create handbags, rucksacks and bags, as well as accessories such as a bottle bag and a designer fan. And so the Campari Design Collection was born from the advertising banner that adorned the Welti Furrer parking garage in Zurich West in September. A creative contribution to the theme of sustainability, which has just been presented to the public at the Christophe Guye Gallery.

What sounds simple was initially a shock for Sonja Trachsel from Vaud: "When I realized the size of my part of the poster, I panicked. Over 50m2 in a 20m2 studio. In the end, I had to spread it out on a meadow and cut it to size." Zurich designer Francesco Rossi - the creator of the famous Rossi bags - had fewer problems with the size. But: "Integrating the color gradient of the poster into the models was difficult. However, this clearly shows that each model is unique." The recycling theme also fits in perfectly with his new pet recycling line. Tanja Klein from Basel used leather to make her bags from blache. For her, who usually only works with leather, the plastic sheet was the biggest challenge. However, she is more than satisfied with the result: "My Campari Design Collection combines unusual material with my own design language."

All the design objects can be purchased via the designers' sales channels.

On a Cupcake Tour

To mark its 25th anniversary, the Stoz advertising agency has a sweet surprise in store for its clients. Instead of celebrating the milestone with a party, the advertising team is paying clients a visit with a box of cupcakes.

3,000 advertising campaigns, 500 clients. That’s the track record of the Stoz advertising agency’s 25-year history. Founded in 1987 by Gusti Stoz, the Pfäffikon-based advertising team now consists of five members. In addition to Max Sommerhalder (print technician, project manager) and Karl Gubser (graphic designer, art director), the founder’s two sons, Michael (graphic designer) and Dennis (print technician), are on board at the agency. To mark this year’s milestone anniversary, the company based in the Zürcher Oberland has come up with a special promotion. Together with his two sons, owner Stoz cruised around the area in a promotional sports car and presented clients and partners with a box of handmade cupcakes.

The tour was intended, on the one hand, to foster personal connections, and on the other, Stoz Sr. wanted to introduce his two sons, who are set to take over the business one day. Stoz describes it as a successful initiative. «For us, it was a wonderful and eventful promotional tour. The idea was very well received.» Everyone took at least a quarter of an hour to talk with us. «And with some of them, we’d still be sitting here today,» jokes Stoz. Although the birthday tour is also part of preparing for the succession, Stoz, at 63, isn’t thinking about retiring just yet.

He’s too attached to his job for that. When he talks about his career as an advertiser, he gets carried away. He finds the diversity of the clientele particularly exciting. In recent years, the agency has had the opportunity to be creative for a wide variety of clients. «From media companies to landscapers, shopping centers, trade associations, and local municipalities,» says Stoz. He speaks just as positively about working together as a family. «There’s nothing better than coming up with an idea together with my sons.» However, Stoz still has one wish for the agency’s future: instead of working on many individual projects, he’d like to be able to provide more comprehensive support to companies again. imp
