Radio journalist from French-speaking Switzerland honored for reporting
On Tuesday in Lausanne, the French-Swiss radio station RSR awarded the 24th Jean Dumur Prize to Gaëtan Vannay. The RSR’s foreign affairs editor and reporter was honored for his courageous reporting from Libya and Syria.
Vannay was the only Western journalist to visit Syria and Libya several times during the protests. He received the award for his reports from the Libyan city of Zentan in March and from the Syrian city of Hama in
July and August, as reported by RTS television and radio in French-speaking Switzerland on Tuesday, according to SDA.
The 39-year-old journalist began his professional career at the Journal de Genève. He then worked at Radio RTN and Couleur 3 RSr. After some time, he left Switzerland and went to Russia to study Russian. He later worked in the UK and Russia as a correspondent for various media. Back in Switzerland, he worked as a business editor at Radio Suisse Romande. In 2009, he took over as head of the foreign desk.
The Jean Dumur Prize is a tribute to the former Head of Information Dumur of French-speaking Swiss Television, who died in 1986. The award, endowed with CHF 5,000, was first presented in 1987.
