Solidarity in Zurich
Following demonstrations in Geneva, Bern, and Lausanne, people across Switzerland once again paid tribute on Thursday to the victims of the attack on the Charlie Hebdo editorial office. A large rally took place at Zurich’s Bürkliplatz, organized by Young Journalists Switzerland.
The day before, Young Journalists Switzerland had called on everyone to stand together "for an open society that will not be deterred from its path by this act of bloodshed."
Several hundred people then gathered at Bürkliplatz in Zurich at 18:30 on Thursday. Two large Islamic umbrella organizations, the Federation of Islamic Umbrella Organizations in Switzerland (Fids) and the Coordination of Islamic Organizations in Switzerland (Kios), also successfully called on Swiss Muslims to take part. In addition, a striking number of their own compatriots commemorated the well-known cartoonists in France.
On Thursday, Charlie Hebdo columnist Patrick Pelloux announced that the satirical magazine would be published next week despite the attack - and with an unusually large print run. Instead of the usual 60000 copies, one million copies are to be printed. (sis/SDA)
