Cable network operators to sell more subscriptions in 2022

Swiss cable network operators sold more subscriptions last year. The losses in the TV and landline businesses were more than offset by growth in broadband Internet and mobile communications.

In total, Suissedigital's members sold around 8.37 million subscriptions as of the end of 2022, according to a statement from the industry association on Monday. That is around 150,000 more than in the previous year.

TV business loses ground

In the TV business, however, subscriptions declined by 7,200 to 2.12 million. However, Suissedigital members remained the clear market leader ahead of Swisscom with 1.57 million TV subscriptions sold, according to the report. Salt is a clear third with fewer than 150,000 TV subscriptions.

By contrast, the association's members were able to make up ground in broadband Internet, where the number of customers rose by 34,500 to around 1.76 million. Mobile communications saw even stronger growth, with an increase of 139,500 to 3.24 million, while fixed-network subscriptions fell by 19,000.

Overall, 2022 was a successful year for the association and its members, CEO Simon Osterwalder is quoted as saying in the release. "As internet usage continues to shift to smartphones, I am particularly pleased with the growth in mobile."

Since the merger of Sunrise and UPC in 2020, Sunrise customers also belong to the association of cable network operators. In total, Suissedigital comprises around 180 companies organized under private and public law, which reportedly supply more than 3 million homes and business units with radio, TV, Internet, telephony and other communications services.
