Juso City of Zurich apologize to Tele Züri

The Young Socialists Juso of the City of Zurich retract the accusations of racism against Tele Züri and its editor-in-chief Markus Gilli. The young party apologized to the Zurich-based private broadcaster on Wednesday evening and described the accusations as unfounded.

The Juso hold that "Markus Gilli is not a racist" and they did not want to call him as such, says the statement of the young party. The apology of the JUSO is the result of the hearing before the justice of the peace, said Gilli on request of the news agency SDA. The Juso take note that the "triggering statement" by SVP National Council member Alfred Heer (ZH) was made in a live broadcast and was immediately objected to by National Council member Christa Markwalder (FDP/BE). In addition, "Sonntalk" presenter Markus Gilli had behaved correctly.

The young party had claimed in a communiqué on October 15 that Tele Züri supported racists and that Gilli was part of racism. The occasion was a "Sonntalk" program of the Zurich private channel with the two members of the National Council Alfred Heer and Christa Markwalder. Heer said at the time: "Especially the young North Africans from Tunisia come as asylum seekers with the intention of becoming criminals. They don't care whether they have emergency aid or social welfare."

Tele Züri and editor-in-chief Markus Gilli reacted to accusations of racism made against them by the Juso by filing a lawsuit (Werbewoche.ch reported). The legal representative of the private broadcaster set the young party a deadline to withdraw the media release and to publish a public apology. However, the Juso let the deadline pass. (SDA)
