Preserving film history: Historiav calls for the rescue of technical cultural assets

The Historiav association brings together media professionals, university lecturers and filmmakers to digitize an important collection of film equipment and make it accessible to the public - and is looking for 500 members to support it.

Zurich's Altstetten district is home to an impressive collection of film equipment - a veritable kaleidoscope of audiovisual history. The collection includes devices and technologies that have shaped consumer behavior for over two centuries and continue to influence the digital media world. With the founding of the Association Historiav by an interdisciplinary group from the media and university landscape, the foundation stone has been laid for transferring this cultural treasure into a digital future.

Historiav's goal is to create a platform that conveys audiovisual processes as cultural techniques and represents a source for research and teaching. This platform provides public access to the collection and enables the general public and educational institutions to explore the media past and future. In doing so, the association not only ensures the continued existence of the unique physical collection, but also contributes to strengthening media literacy. A collection campaign is underway.
