McDonald's Clean-Up-Day 2025: Together for a clean Switzerland

On September 20, McDonald’s will be participating throughout Switzerland as part of IGSU’s national Clean-Up Day. About 98 percent of the more than 180 Swiss restaurants will join guests, partners, and local teams in the cleanup campaign against littering.

When streets, squares and parks all over Switzerland are cleaned up on Saturday, September 20, McDonald's will be there in full force. Together with guests, partners and local licensees, teams will be involved in the IGSU's national Clean-Up Day. Over a dozen city events and numerous local clean-up campaigns make this commitment visible.

"Sustainability thrives on participation - outside, where we are out and about. On Clean-Up Day, we join forces and send out a visible signal against littering," explains Heinz Hänni, Environmental Manager at McDonald's Switzerland. "This year, around 98 percent of our more than 180 Swiss restaurants are taking part again. We are also focusing on reducing packaging as well as on communication, raising awareness and daily clean-up campaigns - every day of the year."

Commitment all year round

The Swiss management team, led by Lara Skripitsky, also lends a hand on Clean-Up Day - together with the local teams, guests and partners. Last year, over 1,700 people took part together with McDonald's. Clean-Up Day highlights what the McDonald's teams do every day: the restaurants invest 90,000 working hours each year in cleaning up around their locations - even in places where the waste does not come from McDonald's guests. They also voluntarily install additional waste garbage cans and actively work with local authorities to develop sustainable solutions.

Progress in packaging

Today, 97 percent of McDonald's Switzerland's service packaging is made of paper and cardboard - almost completely plastic-free. McDonald's has been operating its own recycling system since 1991 - for example, biogas is produced from organic kitchen waste and biodiesel from used frying oil.

McDonald's has been a partner of the IGSU, the national competence center against littering, for many years. The IGSU has been raising awareness of littering since 2007 with information campaigns, school projects and the national Clean-Up Day. Thousands of school classes, clubs and companies take part in this campaign every year.
