Fairness Commission: Complaint about alcohol advertising upheld

The Fairness Commission has upheld a complaint by the IG Plakat Raum Gesellschaft (IG PRG) regarding an alcohol advertisement. The outdoor advertising company Clear Channel had put up the offending poster in the immediate vicinity of a school building on Zurich's Kalkbreitestrasse.

According to an internal industry regulation, tobacco and alcohol advertising must be at least 100 meters away from school buildings. However, random checks have shown that the leading outdoor advertising companies do not adhere to this regulation, writes the IG PRG on its website.

The IG PRG is campaigning for less poster advertising in the city and canton of Zurich. Further cases are pending with the Fairness Commission.

Clear Channel will respond to the complaint, Beat Sulzer, Head of Sales at Clear Channel, told the SDA news agency. "We want to make sure that things like this don't happen," he said. The company will review the locations of the billboards and adjust its computers accordingly.

The Swiss Fairness Commission serves as a self-regulatory body for the advertising industry. It is made up of consumers, media professionals and advertisers. Any person is authorized to complain to this commission about advertising that they consider to be unfair. (SDA)
