Eyeloveyou lets the population research

Eyeloveyou, based in Basel, designed and implemented the Citizen Science platform Opennature.ch, both graphically and technically. Non-experts and nature enthusiasts can easily record their observations online. Observations of nature and the weather have long been measured and recorded electronically.

Natural phenomena and developments of fauna and flora in the seasons are already recorded by various organizations on individual topics. A Swiss web platform now offers a new, simple entry aid: OpenNature gives nature fans the opportunity to post their observations under Opennature.ch and to make them accessible to others and to science.

The Eyeloveyou agency designed the web platform supported by the National Fund on behalf of the Geographical Institute of the University of Bern. The main challenge was to capture the data in a scientifically compliant data structure without sacrificing usability and user-friendliness.

In the interest of keeping user guidance as simple as possible, a very flat hierarchy with clear, unobtrusive color coding is used. Functionalities are clarified with icons and supplemented with tool tips where necessary. Predefined functions, such as the transfer of GPS locations from photo metadata, make operation considerably easier.

But not only the recording of data of a very wide range of topics of observations is a novelty: The recorded data can also be viewed in an animation on a map of Switzerland and as a graph - an interesting effect that should interest many nature lovers. One's own observations can also be looked up in the personal diary.
The platform was implemented on the basis of the open source system LifeRay. The entire platform was meticulously designed in advance by means of wireframes, and every action on the website was precisely aligned to make it as easy as possible to use: From direct image upload and exact matching of the data to be entered with national databases to location determination via automatic recognition of metadata from photos.
