Marc Furrer, Director of the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom), informed the Zurich city government and the Association of Swiss Private Radios on July 3 that a new FM frequency could be made available for a youth radio station in the city of Zurich. Furrer is asking interested parties to let him know by August 9 "whether a youth radio station should be licensed in the city of Zurich". If the response is positive and the Federal Council also agrees, the license will be put out to tender.
Due to commercial constraints, many radios, including Radio 24 and Z, are geared towards the majority taste, so that their music profiles are "hardly distinguishable", Furrer explains. "The result is that many young people hardly listen to the radio anymore", as their music is rarely represented on FM. Youth representatives from Zurich have therefore "repeatedly campaigned for the licensing of corresponding offerings", wrote Furrer. In Zurich radio circles, Egon Blatter, founder of DJRadio, is believed to be the initiator. According to www.dj radio.ch, Blatter has "a vision of a new FM radio station in Zurich" and is holding "important talks with the authorities" (see also p. 20). (mk)
