Last but not least: What a cheese

A Taste of Switzerland in the Land of the Rising Sun: Burger King Japan is serving fondue with its burgers this New Year.

A strange mixture based on the Swiss model: from January 9, the Japanese offshoot of the fast food group will be offering two new, cheesy burgers in the form of "Beef Fondue" and "Chicken Fondue". At first glance, this may come as little surprise, because in this country people are used to the "Verburgerung" of Swiss cheese specialties by competitor McDonald's: McFondue, McRaclette & Co. have long been classics in the restaurant chain's range. In these creations, the cheese is sandwiched between the buns as an ingredient. Like a cheeseburger, but with real cheese.

It's different in Japan, where the melted cheese is served separately in a cardboard caquelon (also called a "cup"). The idea is that you dip the burger in it for the ultimate Swiss culinary feeling.

If you think you can't have more Switzerland, you're wrong. It could, after all. For example, if cheeses were melted that were a little closer to classic fondue than the strange Gouda-Cheddar-Mozzarella-Parmesan-Emmental mixture that Burger King uses. At least according to Designtaxi.com still white wine added - so a certain residual authenticity is present.

Whether the fondue creations are also good advertising for Switzerland as a travel destination cannot be judged at this point. If the burgers taste like they look, Japanese tourists will probably give our country a wide berth in the future. (hae)
