Last but not least: Dog misery

A dog meat festival in southern China is set to be shut down—with help from celebrities and a campaign that avoids using shocking images.

And shocking images are truly a dime a dozen. If you don't believe it, you can google "Yulin Festival" and get an overview. Incidentally, the "We eat animals too" faction can do the same. Or the "I've also tried dog, it tastes like a mixture of rabbit and chicken" faction.

Ricky Gervais is someone who no longer wants to leave the 10,000 dogs that are kidnapped every year - many of them with collars - to their perverse fate. The Brit is known from the brilliant, award-winning BBC series "The Office" and "Extras" - as the lead actor and scriptwriter. Gervais is - depending on his sense of humor - endlessly funny and now takes care of less funny things. Incidentally, he has already done so with anti-fur engagements, Dog meat in Thailand and bullfights. Now Supports he launched a new Petition (and Fundraising) of the organization Humane Society International (HSI). Its aim is to persuade the Chinese authorities to put an end to the "dog festival" in Guangxi, an autonomous region in the south of the People's Republic. Incidentally, the majority of the Chinese population rejects the Yulin Festival.

The petition is now also being supported by advertising. The Canadian agency Grassriots has produced a commercial for HSI that manages without shock images but is still shocking. And it gives the song "The Doggie in the Window", made famous by Patti Page in 1953, an unexpectedly bitter aftertaste. (hae)
