Last but not least: Farewell to the legs swing

In a blog post, ARD apologizes for the way FDP politician Katja Sudings was filmed in a «Tagesschau» segment.

"It's one of those pans we used to see in the '80s and early '90s that liked to provide the template for old-timey sayings," Erste Deutsche Fernsehen writes on the Tagesschau blog. In the report on the Epiphany meeting of the German FDP, the "Tagesschau" first put the legs of the state chairwoman of the FDP Hamburg prominently in the picture, before the camera panned to the upper half of the body, which is more relevant for politicians (you can find the panning of the kickoff here at 5:00).

He has nothing against viewers being outraged about the content of the program - such as Pegida, the FDP or the NSA, says editor-in-chief Kai Gniffke. "But please not about the way we film people. The legs panning belongs on the index."

So that's it for the leg swivel. Banished to the index. At least in Germany. We in the south still have "Glanz & Gloria" - the show in which a leg, back or cleavage panning shot is still part of good manners.

And the appearance of female politicians doesn't matter in this country anyway. Except perhaps in the case of a new Hairstyle. Or when "the most beautiful politician in Switzerland" leaves the SVP. Or when it comes to whether left-wing female politicians really have a "Slut look" (Incidentally, 50 percent of 20 Minuten readers think that appearance is important (!) in politics).

By the way: At least on her election propaganda, Suding is not reduced to her femininity. She is nothing less than "Our man for Hamburg." You'd have to like that slogan - or at least understand it. But as always, we don't interfere in the politics of our neighbors as long as their cavalry doesn't overrun us. (hae)
