The social web remains dynamic. New platforms and applications come and go. And existing ones are used differently. This year, the trend is toward livestreaming apps, because now even the biggest social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have discovered this function for themselves and are motivating active use, as can be seen in the graphic below. This results in completely new potentials.

In order to record such developments and derive potential from them, Xeit has conducted the annual study on the use of social media in Switzerland since 2009.

Is Facebook still relevant? Is WhatsApp still the most popular messenger app? Has livestreaming made the breakthrough into the mass market? How much time do the Swiss spend on social media? Who stores online and what is the significance of shopping via social media? These questions - and many more - occupy the online marketing company on a daily basis. With the survey on social media use in Switzerland, Xeit is laying the analytical foundation for answering these questions for the eighth time. The current edition of the study series "Social Media in Switzerland" is based on a survey panel with 1,129 Swiss participants.

A few findings are summarized below:

Livestreaming has gone mainstream: 48 percent of respondents use one or another livestreaming app. Even if the majority of users are (still) passive.

The most important findings at a glance:

  • Social media use is shifting from home to mobile.
  • More than half of the respondents turn off their cell phones on airplanes at most.
  • 48 percent of respondents have a QR code reader installed on their smartphone. But 70 percent rarely or never use it.
  • Travel and food are the most popular blog topics.
  • WhatsApp remains the most popular messenger in Switzerland, with 69 percent of respondents preferring to send their message via this app.
  • Two-thirds of respondents shop online at least once a month because it is easier/more convenient.
  • Next to YouTube, Facebook remains the social media platform with the highest reach.
  • LinkedIn has overtaken Xing in business social media platforms.
