Branding through affiliate marketing and retargeting

Today more than ever, brands, products and services must also shine digitally. In the digital age, the use of affiliate marketing and retargeting is therefore an important task of digital brand management.

Branding through Affiliate Marketing ...

Establishing contact with customers as often as possible and interacting with them is of particular importance for brand building. Affiliate marketing offers the opportunity to establish contact with the customer online. In general, affiliate marketing falls under the umbrella of online marketing and digital sales and is a form of commission business based on the principle of agency commission. Interested parties can purchase this space in order to advertise their own products or services on the non-owned homepage. The website operator, who provides certain space for affiliate marketing, will "Publisher" or also "Affiliate" called. In contrast, the advertiser is referred to as the "Merchant" or "Advertiser" titled. The following models can be applied, such as cost-per-click (the click on the advertising material), cost-per-lead (the recording of customer data or contacting the customer) or cost-per-sale (sale of the product). The merchant can identify through which affiliate the customer was directed to the website by individual codes associated with the set links. The biggest advantage of affiliate marketing is based on the fact that the agreed commission is paid only when there is a measurable success or an actual turnover. Other well-known affiliate strategies are social media campaigns and email marketing campaigns.

... and retargeting

In the field of affiliate marketing, the method of retargeting is always given special importance. Retargeting acts as a concretizing element and offers the chance to restore the contact with the prospect in an even more target-oriented way. In general, retargeting describes the strategy of personalized targeting in online marketing. But how exactly does retargeting work? A potential customer visits a website, for example an online store, and looks at various products and deposits an item in the shopping cart, but does not purchase it. The visitor to the website is (usually) marked by cookies and this data is forwarded to an ad server. When the user visits another website with advertising content, the tagged customer is recognized by the advertising technology and targeted again with the previous viewed or saved products in the ads.Accordingly, the user is led back to the primary target product with the switched advertisement. The same principle is also applied to a webshop category that has been looked at before or a service that has been searched for. Due to the replay of the interested customer with the same product in a different environment and at a different time, retargeting is one of the most powerful advertising methods. "Performance Marketing Tools". In connection with this, retargeting increases the recognition value of a provider, whose advertising pressure and the click-through rates (CTR) of a website are increased. In online marketing, the click-through rate (CTR) describes the key figure which "the ratio of clicks on a link or an advertising banner depending on the frequency of its display" specifies.

Advantages and disadvantages of retargeting

Opinions on retargeting strategies vary widely. For example, brand managers talk that it "no longer indispensable" whereas data protection experts are of the "Stalking on the web" talk. A polarizing picture also emerges from the user perspective. While some distinguish between a "cool thing" and "quite nice" fluctuate, there are other factions that see retargeting as a "totally unnecessary" or even as "scary" designate. But what exactly is the goal of retargeting and what are the advantages and disadvantages of today's branding? The goal of retargeting strategies is to be remembered as a seller of interesting products for the user, to acquire returning visitors or to reactivate lost customers. Accordingly, a brand can use affiliate marketing and retargeting to place itself better and more frequently in the consumer's everyday life and to generate attention for itself. The visibility of a brand is therefore actively strengthened by the owner.retargeting concentrates its advertising expenditure on the people. It is therefore a schonsamer-oriented tool and thus puts the user at the center. This example also shows the new distribution of power between the consumer and the companies, which was discussed in the previous section. In general, it can be confirmed that retargeting measures that are tailored to the potential buyer trigger a feeling of appreciation in the customer. As a result, a higher willingness to buy as well as conversion rates of a company can be recorded. Accordingly, retargeting allows to create tailored advertising for specific target groups, which increases the users' engagement with the advertising materials and manages to further educate the brand as well as place it more in the center of marketing activities.

Campaigns that are too penetrating can provoke rejection

However, retargeting also carries several risks for the brand. From the user perspective, targeted advertising in the form of ads can trigger a negative effect. The risk of converting the user's interest into a strong rejection of the product can be triggered by a penetrating retargeting campaign. The difficulty for the company here is that the respective pain threshold for different potential customers is subjective and can therefore only be determined individually to a limited extent. In the worst case, retargeting can not only lead to the loss of the customer, but also trigger the feeling of annoyance, whereby this can be produced by the user on the advertising company. For this reason, retargeting should be used with caution especially in brand building, as it can also trigger negative effects. In addition, branding and retargeting interact with each other. If the branding of a brand works, the retargeting also works easier. Having trust towards people or things that are known to people is in their nature. For this reason, the user trusts a brand that is previously known to him, conversion rates and click-through rates are also positively influenced.Retargeting is particularly interesting in terms of repeated targeting of interested customers in a different environment, as well as the active placement of the brand of companies in everyday consumer life. There are both positive and negative effect as well as partly unspoken rules regarding the effect and acceptance from the consumer perspective.
