Chinese telecom giant Unicom launches in Zurich
Die halbstaatliche China Unicom, einer der grössten Telekomanbieter der Welt, hat in Zürich eine Filiale eröffnet, wie die Handelszeitung in ihrer neusten Ausgabe schreibt.
China Unicom will offer cross-border data and Internet services in Switzerland, also in view of the growing number of Chinese companies in this country. In the meantime, more than eighty companies in Switzerland belong to owners from the People's Republic. China Unicom could not be reached for comment on the new Swiss subsidiary.
The Zurich branch of China Unicom reports to the European business based in London. In addition to the Swiss subsidiary, the semi-state-owned Chinese telecommunications group also operates branches in Germany and Russia. In the next few years, the mobile communications business is to be expanded in Europe in addition to the current global carrier services.
The telecom group is number two in the Chinese mobile communications market and last year generated sales equivalent to around 40 billion dollars with 270,000 employees. In addition to state owners, the two domestic technology groups Alibaba and Tencent have also been among Unicom's shareholders since the summer.
