iPads more popular in Switzerland than Android and Windows tablets
Swiss people prefer iPads to tablets running other operating systems. About 60 percent of them go online using an iPad today. For the first time, Net-Metrix is publishing survey data on operating system usage on tablets and smartphones.

The Android operating system is installed on their device by 3 out of 10 tablet users, and one in ten uses a Windows tablet. In smartphone use, the difference between iOS and Android is not quite as drastic: 48 percent surf with an iPhone and 45 percent with an Android device. Among younger smartphone users, however, a tendency toward Android can be observed. More than half of 14- to 34-year-olds use Google's operating system. It is therefore the most popular in this age group. In the over-35 age group, Apple makes the running and is the most widespread with a share of over 51 percent.
Surfing via wi-fi dominates
9 out of 10 tablet users say they connect to the Internet primarily via a wireless network. Half of smartphone users do the same. The proportion of users who mainly use their smartphone via the mobile network (3G, 4G, etc.) is considerable at over one-fifth. Around 29 percent say they go online via wifi and the mobile network with roughly equal frequency.
Tablet and smartphone use still on an upward trend
In 2010, Net-Metrix published data on mobile Internet usage for the first time: At that time, 29 percent used a smartphone or Internet-enabled phone. Within 6 years, this share has more than doubled to 67 percent. Tablet use has experienced an even greater increase in the last five years: While a minority of 6 percent used a tablet in 2011, today almost half of the Swiss population (45 percent) use it to surf the Internet several times a month or more.
