WhatsApp gives Facebook more data

Almost two years after the takeover of WhatsApp, which cost over 20 billion dollars, Facebook wants to integrate the services more closely.

In future, WhatsApp users' telephone numbers and information on how frequently the text messaging service is used will be passed on to Facebook. Existing WhatsApp members can at least object to the use of their data for the personalization of Facebook advertising and friend suggestions, the company explained on Thursday. In future, however, the phone number will be passed on to Facebook in any case if you want to continue using the app. At the same time, WhatsApp emphasized that Facebook will never have access to the content of text messages. With the introduction of end-to-end encryption in the spring, they will only be visible to the users involved and not even to WhatsApp itself.

Among other things, the matching of the phone number is intended to display more relevant advertising on Facebook, the statement continued. For example, if a WhatsApp user has also shared their cell phone number with retailers who place ads on Facebook and upload their databases for this purpose, they could be shown offers from the business as a result of the comparison. The new terms of use also deal with the plans to use WhatsApp for communication between users and companies. Facebook acquired WhatsApp in the fall of 2014 for around 22 billion dollars. The short message service now has more than one billion users. (SDA)
