Last but not least: Gin and Joiz

Thanks to Jimmy Fallon, TV journalist Brian Williams is rapping again. This time, it's «Gin and Juice.» These mashup classics just keep getting better and better.

Since April, the Swiss social TV channel Joiz has been airing the globally acclaimed U.S. late-night show «The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.» From Monday through Thursday at 10 p.m., the previous day’s episode is shown in the original language. No subtitles—Joiz’s young viewers are learning English, and the Joiz editors get some peace and quiet. It’s a good idea, because Jimmy Fallon has long been a superstar among the web generation, even outside the U.S. Clips from the show are posted on YouTube and, with impressive regularity, become viral hits. Impressive, yes; surprising, no. After all, the show’s creative output never fails to delight.

Take, for example, the idea of having NBC television journalist Brian Williams rap hip-hop classics. The individual words of the songs are searched for, found, and pieced together during the newscasts. Williams kicked things off almost a year ago with «Nothing but a G Thang» by Snoop Dogg. This was followed by hits such as «Straight Outta Compton» by N.W.A. and  «Good Vibrations» by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. In February, it reached «Rapper's Delight» by the Sugar Hill Gang—thanks in no small part to the two guest appearances and their perfected technique—has garnered over 10 million views on YouTube.

At the end of April, the latest and best installment yet—Snoop Dogg again, this time with the 1993 West Coast anthem «Gin and Juice.» The remix was so well thought out that Brian Williams’ version is barely distinguishable from the Original distinguishes. Incidentally, the videos were created by John MacDonald, a member of Fallon's team. He is said to have used Williams' material for the compilations over a period of five years. (hae)
