Magistral advertising (r)day

Like the Sechseläuten, Advertising Day is also held under the auspices of the Swiss Advertising Association (SW)

Like Sechseläuten, the Advertising Day - which is held under the auspices of the Swiss Advertising Association (SW)By Beat Fritsch - is an unmistakable sign that spring is on its way. Traditionally, the event takes place in the first half of May, and right at the beginning of the official part, the weather welcomed the advertisers arriving at the in-location Kaufleuten with a heavy, spring-like downpour.
Only the visitors to the previous general meetings of Sawi and the Idée-VfW communications association got away dry. The former met in the morning at the five-star Hotel Baur au Lac, and the participants had already gathered at Pelikanplatz after lunch, while the visitors to the Idée-VfW AGM met directly in the Kaufleuten Lounge and were therefore able to move to the neighboring hall with dry heads.
Another consequence of the brief storm: the Federal Councillor's guest of honor and eagerly awaited speaker, Foreign Minister Joseph Deiss, had to be patient at Zurich main station. And in true Swiss modesty, he joined the queue at the cab rank no differently to other travelers, as he told SW President Carlo Schmid-Sutter after his late arrival.
Since Carlo Schmid-Sutter has been President of the SW, a Federal Councillor has taken to the podium on Advertising Day every year. With Joseph Deiss, it was someone who not only knows about advertising, but also has his own views on the subject.
As a professor of economics, he considers advertising technology to be a strongly influential element, but one that cannot be analyzed at this faculty. As Foreign Minister, he states that advertising in Switzerland is more well-behaved than elsewhere, although he does not mean this negatively in terms of content, but rather in terms of the abundance of advertising media and opportunities.
As a magistrate from a bilingual canton, he also noticed that advertisers from French-speaking Switzerland were not adequately perceived in the German-speaking part of the country. And finally, as a private individual, even a Swiss foreign minister can simply enjoy good advertising, especially if it is peppered with humor and the messages are original.
However, as the tabloid press recently reported, the head of the diplomatic corps found the latest PR efforts of ambassador's wife Shawne Fielding on his own behalf less original - the dominant topic of conversation at the SW meeting alongside advertising.
SW President Carlo Schmid-Sutter did not want to toot the same horn in this regard. He was part of the pro-fielding faction, he said. After all, the woman brings some spice to the otherwise rather sluggish political business and - let's be honest - she has not harmed our country in any way with her actions so far. The former President of the Council of States said pointedly that he found the current prophecies of doom from political celebrities to be "quite bünzlig". And he probably spoke from the heart not only of the self-confessed Fielding fan Reinhold Weber from WHS, who was also present, but also of most advertisers. After all, the Texan bird of paradise already enjoys recognized cult status in communications circles.
Beat Fritsch

met guest of honor Federal Councillor Joseph Deiss on Advertising Day for a brief but exciting tête-à-tête alongside the industry celebrities in attendance. And for once, our author was not only on the road as an event researcher, but also acted in another role. At the general meeting of the industry association Idée-VfW, he was elected to the board for the next two years. WerbeWoche would like to congratulate him on his election.
