Depositphotos_83765810_s-2015Finding the right training course is also challenging in social media. Digital communication is developing rapidly and the range of courses on offer is growing at the same pace. eggheads.ch conducted a study to find out what skills employers expect from their social media managers. Between October 2016 and June 2017, the further education portal eggheads.ch analyzed 50 jobs advertised online with the keyword social media in the job title.Social media management often combined with online marketing or content marketingThe majority of companies in Switzerland are looking for pure social media managers. However, a good two out of five advertised positions include other disciplines in the portfolio. These are most frequently online marketing and, slightly behind, content marketing. The requirement to find, plan and publish content was mentioned most frequently across all advertised positions. Those who can manage channels operationally and maintain company presences in social networks therefore have good prospects of being hired.Analytical skills in high demandFor communication in the digital environment, social media managers should be able to work with data, specifically analyze the response achieved with their posts, tweets and videos and prepare reports for management. They should also be able to set up and operate a monitoring system to observe what is happening on their own channels and on the web as a whole.Campaigning and advertising increasingly importantIn order to get one of the jobs examined, you also need the ability to design, implement and evaluate campaigns. "On the one hand, this reflects the proximity to marketing in general and, on the other, the evolution of Facebook & Co. into pay-to-play platforms," says Rosenberger. Anyone who can place Facebook ads has a good chance of getting one of the jobs examined.Keeping your finger on the pulse and filtering out what's importantSocial networks are evolving on a daily basis and new platforms and communities are constantly appearing. Accordingly, companies are looking for specialists who can further develop their own channels and apply innovations in their own operations. In order to be able to filter out what is relevant for their own marketing and communication success from the flood of news, employers want social media managers who have their finger on the pulse of developments and bring trends into the company.Community management also still just in the top 10Another of the most important skills of a social media manager, as measured by the job advertisements surveyed, is managing a community and promoting engagement with fans and followers. It is much rarer for companies to advertise social media jobs that involve developing a social media strategy or redesigning the company's website.Social media skills alone are not enoughIn addition to the social media skills in demand, companies are also looking for other skills. Experience in digital marketing is expected for a good one in three positions. The sought-after candidates also include those who can maintain websites and operate CMS, as in one in five jobs the social media manager is also responsible for the website or other digital presence. In line with the high importance of operational social media management, text or content marketing skills round off the social media manager's profile.
