"Email arrived?": Users are annoyed by queries - and uninteresting advertising mails

A study by Adobe reveals what annoys users about the emails they receive. According to the study, one in five people is regularly annoyed when the sender misspells their name in the very first line. Phrases such as «I’m not sure if you received my last message» are also considered annoying.

The survey polled more than 1,000 employees in the USA. In addition to asking whether messages have already been read, many users are also annoyed by phrases that introduce reminders, such as "In my last e-mail...". This repeatedly attracts the negative attention of 13 percent. Eleven percent also find it annoying to be repeatedly asked for news on certain topics.

Even though it can happen that an e-mail is sent twice, ten percent state that another e-mail with an apology for this annoys them. In addition to these e-mails that are perceived as annoying, the study provides information on how recipients are not immediately annoyed with a new message. Forty-five percent said they are most annoyed by people who constantly send e-mails, while one in three users feels disturbed when he or she receives recommendations for products that do not match their own interests.

Volume increases

Offers and coupon codes are a thorn in the side for 22 percent of respondents. 17 percent also find it annoying when the sender misspells their name. Adobe's study found that email use is on the rise, despite social networks and messaging apps. "Why is email so ingrained in our lives? One reason may be that it is so manageable - we can sort, file, filter and get things done. It's also considered secure," Adobe sums up. (pte)
