Twelve Years of Commitment to the Debate on Media Quality

The Medienqualität Schweiz (MQS) association will be dissolved at the end of 2026. This was decided by the association’s general assembly on May 20, 2026, in Zurich. Since its founding in 2014, the Medienqualität Schweiz association has been committed to promoting and fostering an objective discussion about media quality in Switzerland—for twelve years.

The MQS’s flagship project was the Media Quality Ranking, which was developed and implemented in close collaboration with renowned university institutes. Over the years, it provided important empirical data to inform the public debate on the quality of the Swiss media system.

Structural and financial factors are the deciding factors

In recent years, the media landscape and the ways in which it is used have changed significantly. At the same time, the structural and financial conditions for the institutionalized continuation of the association and its projects have become increasingly challenging, according to the statement. Despite exploring various options for further development and repositioning, the board concluded that the conditions for the association’s sustainable financial continuation no longer exist.

Media quality remains socially relevant

According to the statement, the dissolution of the Medienqualität Schweiz association does not signify a shift away from the issue. In light of advancing digitalization, concentration in the media market, and new players, media quality remains of central importance to society. The studies and findings produced by MQS to date will be documented and remain accessible. The participating research institutes will continue their research on media quality independently of the association.

The association would like to thank its academic partner institutions, members, supporters, and sponsors for their long-standing commitment and constructive collaboration.
