Tunisian journalist honored with democracy prize

Tunisian journalist Sihem Bensedrine is the recipient of the 2011 Ibn Rushd Prize. She received the award, which comes with a prize of 2,500 euros, for her commitment to democracy and freedom of expression in Tunisia.

The German-based Ibn Rushd Fund for Free Thought has been awarding this prize since 1998 and is committed to the democratization of the Arab world. As the foundation announced before the award ceremony in Berlin on Friday, Bensedrine has been committed to this cause for decades. According to SDA, she had operated an educational website despite being banned and blocked. The journalist was forced into temporary exile due to threats to her life, but returned to her home country after the Tunisian revolution began in early 2011.
