Thomson Reuters closes fourth quarter with a loss

Thomson Reuters, a financial data specialist, posted a loss of $2.57 billion for the fourth quarter due to a $3 billion impairment charge.

In the same period last year, the news and data group had still earned 224 million dollars. Thomson Reuters was created in 2008 with the takeover of the British news provider Reuters by the Canadian media group Thomson. Thomson paid around 17 billion dollars for Reuters.

The business with financial market clients, largely identical to the acquired Reuters businesses, has been the problem child of the group for some time, which replaced its long-standing boss Tom Glocer with James Smith in December.

The financial crisis has taken a heavy toll on the Markets division's main customers, the banks, and thus also affected Thomson Reuters' business with data and message terminals for traders and fund managers. (SDA/RTD)
