Swisscable: Strong growth in digital television
Cable networks in Switzerland gained customers across all digital services in the first quarter of this year. The strongest growth was seen in the digital TV segment.
Swiss cable networks grew in all digital markets in the first quarter of 2011. The largest year-on-year growth was recorded in digital cable TV with around 206,000 new subscribers (+32%), as Swisscable writes in a press release. In total, more than 844,000 households had digital cable TV at the end of March 2011. This figure includes the use of high-definition television (HDTV), which is available throughout the entire cable network coverage area. The penetration of digital television on cable was therefore just under 30% (+8%). In addition to digital cable television, the areas of cable internet (+50,408 customers) and cable telephony (+67,545 customers) also grew in the first quarter of 2011.
Swisscable is the trade association of Swiss cable TV companies. It is made up of around 240 private and public companies that supply more than 2.8 million households with radio, TV, HDTV, Internet, telephony and other services.
